An international thriller set in eighteenth-century Europe by the master of the clever twist and acclaimed author of the James Maxted series (The Sunday Telegraph). Its January 1721, and London is still reeling from the recession caused by the greatest financial scandal of the age: the collapse of the South Sea Bubble. William Spandrel, a penniless mapmaker, is offered a rare chance to clear his debts. But Sir Theodore Janssen, a director of the South Sea Company, has one condition: Spandrel must secretly convey an important package to Amsterdam. Shortly after delivering the parcel, its recipient is killed. Then, barely surviving an attempt on his own life, Spandrel discovers that he is the prime suspect in the murderand a pawn in a dangerous game. With British government agents and other foes on his trail, Spandrels only chance of survival is to recover the package and place its contents in the hands of the right person. But determining who that is will be a deadly challenge . . . [A] picaresque tale of high adventure and low intrigue . . . The historical period is vividly conjured up and the narrative flows effortlessly . . . Engrossing storytelling of a very high order. The Observer Hugely enjoyable . . . Totally entertaining. A favorite author! He blends my two favorite genre—historical fiction and mystery. This one is set in the 1720‘s as the South Sea Company collapses. William Spandrel, an innocent London mapmaker, becomes a pawn of the rich and powerful who are trying to protect themselves from scandal. While I did not think this one of his best works, I enjoyed this adventure story filled with suspense and intrigue.
2nd book read for #AwesomeAugust

Crazeedi Never heard of this author either! You're a bad influence on my tbr list😉 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi Andrew turned me on to his books! His books are the best! lol I'm sending you 14 of his books from my swap site so they won't be coming directly from me. But you will enjoy his books.
One book (Corners of the Globe) is the 2nd book in the trilogy so you should wait until you get Book 1 and Book 3 before reading that one.

Crazeedi Oh my goodness Eadie! You didn't have to do that!!!! If @Andrew65 recommended to you, I know I will enjoy. He hasn't steered me wrong yet, and neither have you. My husband is going to wonder where I'm getting all the money to buy the books! Lol I'll have to warn him.❤❤❤ 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Totally agree with @EadieB Robert Goddard is a master storyteller and not sure why he is not better known. Don‘t think I have ever read a book of his I didn‘t love, a master of his art, and yet every book is so different. This book is a real favourite of his. 🥰 5y
