Fire Front: First Nations Poetry and Power Today | Alison Whittaker
7 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
This important anthology, curated by Gomeroi poet and academic Alison Whittaker, showcases Australia's most-respected First Nations poets alongside some of the rising stars. Featured poets include Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Ruby Langford Ginibi, Ellen van Neerven, Tony Birch, Claire G. Coleman, Evelyn Araluen, Jack Davis, Kevin Gilbert, Lionel Fogarty, Sam Wagan Watson, Ali Cobby Eckermann, Archie Roach and Alexis Wright. Divided into five thematic sections, each one is introduced by an essay from a leading Aboriginal writer and thinker - Bruce Pascoe, Ali Cobby Eckermann, Chelsea Bond, Evelyn Araluen and Steven Oliver - who reflects on the power of First Nations poetry with their own original contribution. This incredible book is a testament to the renaissance of First Nations poetry happening in Australia right now.

I haven‘t been here for so long, I‘ve almost forgotten what to do!

Reading a lot more poetry these days, especially First Nations voices. Powerful, angry, hopeful, truth telling.

MrsMalaprop Yaaay! Welcome back. I‘ve seen this one around. Might have to get to it. 3y
CarolynM Great to see you back👋 Have you read any more Iris Murdoch? 3y
Brona @MrsMalaprop thank you! I can highly recommend it. 3y
Brona @CarolynM thank you! I read 4 or 5 Murdoch‘s 2 yrs ago with lyzzybee‘s readalong, but no more since. I‘ve just finished reading the 3 Wolf Hall books which was a big commitment. 3y

When people say English is a tricky language, I say: “That‘s because it‘s used to trick people”; gives them a false sense of security to manipulate them into another‘s bidding.

There were no Aboriginal people here over two hundred years ago. There were no blacks, blackfellas, Aborigines, Aboriginals, First Nations, natives, Indigenous, First Australians, Original Australians, Traditional Owners, First People, original occupants or — the favourites of racists — ‘abos‘, ‘boongs‘ or ‘coons‘.*

from ‘Lead You To The Shore‘ by Steven Oliver

*typed full quote - please DON‘T ever use these pejorative terms. Heartbreaking.
