Darkly: Black History and America's Gothic Soul | Leila Taylor
2 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Haunted houses, bitter revenants and muffled heartbeats under floorboards Ñ the American gothic is a macabre tale based on a true story. Part memoir and part cultural critique, Darkly reveals the heart of AmericaÕs darkness in the specters left from chattel slavery and the persistence of white supremacy. Locating the gothic in technologies of terror, the insurgency of melancholy, and the guilty conscience of a country that got away with murder, Darkly shows how this trauma has been metabolized into art, music, film, and literature. America's story is founded in horror, with a culture shaped from the Black experience, proving that you canÕt get more goth than Black.

Having COVID really sucks, but it's giving me time to catch up on reading! Loved this book. I like the author's style, it's very conversational, even though a lot of the topics are very heavy.

And so, after waking absurdly early, I am reading about Black Goth culture, the difference between terror and horror, and why Black people in America have a ‘spooky‘ relationship with the gothic—with a hey-ho and the wind and the rain...

Such a good discourse. #library #goth #spooky #earlymorning

PurpleTulipGirl Power went out over here on the coast around 3, but only briefly. Lots of wind = lots of rearranged deck furniture. 4y
MargaretPinardAuthor @PurpleTulipGirl whoa! More wind and rain than we had this time around! 4y
PurpleTulipGirl We‘re supposed to head south to Depoe Bay next week for a couple days of a much needed change of scenery, but between the weather forecast and the virus, I‘m hesitant. 4y
MargaretPinardAuthor @PurpleTulipGirl 😥 I hope it‘s not mega/raining on Thursday when I have a big drive. Ugh. Keep your chin up! 4y
