All about Sarah
All about Sarah | Pauline Delabroy-Allard
4 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
A literary sensation in France, an intoxicating and evocative debut novel about the all-consuming love affair between two women and the ruin it leaves in its wake. It's all about Sarah, her mysterious beauty, Sarah the impetuous, Sarah the passionate, Sarah the sulphurous, it's all about the exact moment when the match flares, the exact moment when that piece of wood becomes fire, when the spark lights up the darkness. A thirty-something teacher drifts through her life in Paris, raising a daughter on her own, lonely in spite of a new boyfriend. Then one night, at a friend's tepid New Year's Eve party, Sarah enters the scene like a tornado. A talented young violinist, she is loud, vivacious, appealingly unkempt in a world where everyone seems preoccupied with being 'just so'. It is the beginning of an intense relationship, tender and violent, that will upend both women's lives. All About Sarah perfectly captures the pull of a desire so strong that it blinds us to everything else.

Mehso-so

Two women in Paris embark on a passionate, disastrous love affair. There are times this book is beautifully written and one feels for the characters. At other times, though, it is overwrought and the characters seem overly dramatic and unreal and the ending is incredibly dissatisfying. A mixed bag.

Definitely a book of 2 halves. I loved part 1, the gorgeous writing of an intense love affair between an unnamed teacher and a vibrant musician. Our narrator loses herself in an all-consuming passion for Sarah, a whirlwind of volatility and obsession. Part 2, which I liked less, is even darker. A portrait of a woman spiraling from loss, grief, guilt and possibly madness. I loved the beautiful spare writing, and its stream of consciousness style.

A single mother meets a violinist and they embark on a tumultuous relationship - all the blurbs say this is a literary sensation in France and it comes out here tomorrow. I enjoyed the first half more than the second because it does get pretty dark, so if you want to know the difference between a romance and literary fiction about a relationship, this can be exhibit 17. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy (Part of me is a little weary of relationships between two women ending in disaster, but when one character is referred to as an "unexpected tornado," what can you do.)

The writing about classical music is great and I listened to all works mentioned along the way. It's #pridemonth so here's a book to add to your list!

ReadingEnvy @Reggie ha! Exactly! Except the narrator is more like the farmhouse on an open prairie.... 5y
