Crossed off another goal for #SuperSeptember

Was kind of disappointed with this one 🌟 2.5/5

My goals for the #readathon are:
◇Finish Humans of New York ✅️
◇Finish Fahrenheit 451 ✅️
◇Finish Cerulean Sea 🙄🥴 (a year+ later)
◇Start and finish 1984
◇Make progress in The Goblet of Fire Illustrated

kbibliophilific I have but haven‘t read yet. Somehow it was never a required HS reading that most ppl seemed to have already read. 5mo
Alora @kbibliophilific Same! I had the option between 5 or so different books. This was one of them but surprisingly I didnt pick it. I chose A Clockwork Orange. Oh boy lol 😆 5mo
TheHungryBookworms I enjoyed it. Hated the movie though. Book was pretty good to me 5mo

Alora @TheHungryBookworms I've heard the movie wasn't the best. I liked the idea of the book but I couldn't get into it lol. 5mo
TheHungryBookworms @Alora it happens. I dislike some books my friends love and they look at me like i was broken. Lol. But i live that we are all different and we dont all like the same things. That would be boring 5mo
Alora @TheHungryBookworms Yes I definitely agree! There's been some popular books that people are all hyped about and I couldn't get into it. And others I loved that had mixed reviews. 5mo
Andrew65 A true classic. Well done 👏👏👏 5mo

I‘m so grateful to those deplorable folks who tried to get this book banned from the school system! Due to their nonsense I finally picked up this hilarious and heartwarming coming of age story. Mike Munoz is just trying to figure things out but life keeps throwing obstacles his way. This is a story of acceptance, finding love and learning to follow your heart. And certainly that type of message belongs in the classroom?!!! #BannedBooksWeek

Cinfhen Thanks to @Reggie for first putting this book on my #ReadersRadar 5mo
TheRiehlDeal I looked up on why this was banned and it‘s because the protagonist is gay. Clearly people can‘t accept even a FICTIONAL person‘s sexuality! Just keep banning books, everyone! More books for us to read! 🤓📚 5mo
Cinfhen It‘s actually unbelievable to me @TheRiehlDeal - I‘ve already started my next #BannedBook and I have NO CLUE what‘s “obscene “ about it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5mo

KathyWheeler I read Poet X because of similar efforts to ban it. I probably would not have read it otherwise. I loved it and don‘t get what‘s “offensive” about it. 5mo
Reggie @TheRiehlDeal and just to put this out there, I would never consider this lgbt fiction. Like he barely realizes he‘s gay in the last quarter of the book. And maybe that happens for some people. There are latent gays but for this book to be banned because of it, shocked. I‘m still in shock. 5mo
Cinfhen I TOTALLY agree @Reggie !! I LOVED Poet X @KathyWheeler and I can‘t believe that‘s on the list!!! It‘s true @TheRiehlDeal the more they protest the MORE I want to read the books!!!! 5mo
TheRiehlDeal @Reggie I haven‘t read this book yet, so that just makes it even more appalling. 5mo
Megabooks Stacked!! 5mo
Cinfhen Audio was great @Megabooks #Hoopla 5mo
Centique @Cinfhen @Reggie the whole book banning concept is completely bizarre. Here, if you want to ban a book or a movie, you have to apply to a national body that only bans like actual snuff movies. Like 1 every 5yrs. But we‘ve got this growing minority of anti-everything ppl seeking power lately 😫 - so sadly it may end up happening here too. 5mo
Cinfhen It‘s ridiculous @Centique ‼️ hope you can keep your moral police in check 5mo
Reggie @Centique I just don‘t get it. I hope cooler heads prevail in NZ. 5mo
CarolynM Stacked🙂 Book banning pretty much died in Australia in the 1960‘s when Penguin and some brave booksellers defied the ban on Portnoy‘s Complaint and the govt lost in the law courts and in the court of public opinion. Our loony right carry on about a lot of the same issues as the rest of the world, but, fortunately, banning books doesn‘t seem to be a priority for them. 5mo
Cinfhen Happy to hear book banning isn‘t a thing - another plus for why I love Australia 🇦🇺 @CarolynM 5mo
Bookzombie @Reggie I agree with you. I was surprised that it didn‘t really come until the last part of the book since it‘s the reason for the banning. Such a good book! 4mo
britt_brooke We are facing some book banning issues in our county. This one is next up, apparently. 🙄 4mo

4 ⭐ Jack Prelutsky is such a phenomenal children‘s poet; I find it hard to believe that he has been banned. This book and its sequel the Headless Horseman Rides Again have both been banned. Why? Because they are scary. And because a while ago a 7-year-old in Ohio had an upset stomach after reading these scary tales (I wish I were making that up). I loved this book. It does not need to be banned.

ozma.of.oz The art style reminds me of Edward Gorey a little bit! ❤️ 6mo
mandarchy This is a classic! I have this in my library and I have many students who ask for the scary books. 6mo
LibrarianRyan @ozma.of.oz yes it does!! 6mo
LibrarianRyan @mandarchy I know I was so surprised to find it on the banned boook list. 6mo

Madeline and the Gypsies | Ludwig Bemelmans

2 ⭐ I love Madeline books. But this Madeline has ended up on the Banned Book list, and I understand why. Although it was originally written in 1956/57, racial bias and stereotyping is alive and well. The way the author describes the “gypsies” is harmful stereotyping. ⬇

#bannedbook #bbrc

LibrarianRyan I would have thought that although a classic, the publishing house might have tried to clean things up, or change it to remove parts like sewing the kids in lion pelts to hide them from their teacher (in effect stealing the children) would have been redone, but I cannot find that to be true. So, while I love Madeline, I think this book can stay in the catacombs from which it came. 6mo

Crow Boy | Taro Yashima

2 ⭐ This book does not age well. For 1955 it is a great example of “own voices” but by today‘s standards this book would be considered racist, ablest, and a host of other things. We do not even get to know Crow Boy‘s name. Throughout the book he is called Chibi (Tiny one in Japanese), but no real name. ⬇

Early and rare warm evening, great for finishing this book on the porch. I loved this book, but lost some patience with abrupt scene changes. It's a great middle grade read that touches on mental illness (without the drama of suicide). It's rare to see budding romances at this level, but some kids crave that. 🏝 🇻🇬 #LGBTQ 🌈 #rainbowlibrary 🏳️‍🌈 #kidsneedtoseethemselves #bannedbook 🚫

TheBookHippie I liked this one! 9mo
mandarchy @TheBookHippie I like her characterization of the other girls at school. Her main character was so completely alone at times. 9mo
TheBookHippie @mandarchy Yes. Reminded me of my childhood a bit. I can see this book being so helpful to so many readers. Did you read Felix ever after? 9mo
See All 9 Comments
mandarchy @TheBookHippie not yet. I am not aware of it. Is it the same author? I just down loaded a Kelly Barnhill book. I'm trying to put off adult fiction until school gets out. So I'm on a middle grade kick. 🙃 I'll go see if I can find Felix. 9mo
TheBookHippie @mandarchy same author - YA I believe . 9mo
mandarchy @TheBookHippie I'll have to put it off with the adult fiction. My oldest students are 11. 9mo
TheBookHippie @mandarchy I get that! My oldest students currently are 8 ♥️. 9mo
mandarchy @TheBookHippie I'm really happy they made Hurricane Child MG. We need more rainbow reads, one- so kids can see themselves and two- to normalize lgbtq identity. I'm glad publishers are diversifying, the book banning will hopeful drive sales. I feel bad for kids living in communities that squash their being, hopefully they find these books on their own. 9mo
TheBookHippie @mandarchy I whole heartedly agree! 9mo

The annual Trinity boy‘s prep school fundraiser involves selling chocolates. This year the school‘s secret society,The Vigils, is asked by Brother Leon to make certain it is a success. Sadistic Brother Leon has misappropriated school funds. New student Jerry Renault decides not to participate, and the school is in an uproar. #bullying #facultycorruption #bannedbook
