Meet Kirsten may have been written in 1988 about a girl living in 1854, but it‘s still deeply relevant to our lives right here, right now in 2020. On today‘s episode of my podcast, I take a close look at this with the help of Kate Kennedy from the Be There in Five podcast. 🇺🇸 Link to listen in bio!

Kirsten was always my favorite. I'm from Minnesota and though my family isn't Scandi, most of my town was. Erasure of Native peoples is a huge issue here. The Looking Back section which asks readers what they would choose to take with them if they could only take one trunk and says "one of your relatives probably had to make decisions like these, because there is a story like Kirsten's in nearly every American family." 1/2

ErinSBecker Completely ignoring the many readers who are Native and/or Black (and didn't have the opportunity to choose to bring anything with them). I hate that girls that, like me were reading fiends, have been hurt by so many insensitive assumptions and otherings like this in so many books. 4y
ErinSBecker Girls who were reading fiends like me, but not the immigrant white demographic being assumed by the author, I mean. 4y
KVanRead Very true. 4y

When I was ten years old, my mom bought for me and my two younger sisters each an American Girl Doll. I got Kirsten.

Years later, after Kirsten had been packed away in a box, my mom came to me and asked if Kirsten could sacrifice a few limbs so we could fix a couple dolls for my younger cousins. I said yes. And the remnants of Kirsten were packed away for a few more years.

This Christmas, my mom sent Kirsten off to the Doll Hospital. ❤️🎄❤️🎄❤️

MoonWitch94 Omg the cutest gift!!! 5y
Palimpsest You‘re a better person than me. I have an original Samatha from when it was still The Pleasant Company and even though she‘s over thirty years old I could never sacrifice her. 🙊Good of you though! 5y
Clare-Dragonfly Oh, how sweet! 5y

Heading to Mall of America in the morning for the weekend. Taking the pooch to a kennel for the first time. Looking forward to many memories with the family, but I sure hate the prep for a trip! #pearl #newtires #kidoutallweekwithstrep #lastminutevettripforflybitesondog

moranadatter Have fun! Say hello to MN for me. 8y

I complained about my lack of books BEFORE the box from my parents and grandparents arrived. They listened to my list AND my husband's suggestions! #christmashaul #bookhaul

$0.50 at the HPB sale today but I couldn't resist. After all, it's me! I had this namesake doll as a child and despite what I may look like now as a young girl I actually resembled my American Girl doll a little. Having an unusual name everyone misspells and mispronounces I was simply ecstatic having someone (even just a doll) share my name. This was a pure nostalgia purchase.

[DELETED] 1409720085 I loved these growing up. 💕 8y
AStoriedSoul I loved, lived, and breathed American Girl when I was a young girl. I still have my dolls, books, and all their things. They were such a wonderful concept. 8y
DiruVamp @emilydecato @TheLiterarium they were fabulous weren't they? I wish I still had mine but sadly she got lost throughout the years. 8y
readinginthedark American Girls were the best! My sister had Samantha, but I think her favorite after reading the books was Molly. I took a longer time to deliberate and ended up with Josefina. 8y
