Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong
Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong | Prudence Shen
13 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
You wouldn't expect Nate and Charlie to be friends. Charlie's the laid-back captain of the basketball team, and Nate is the neurotic, scheming president of the robotics club. But they are friends, however unlikelyuntil Nate declares war on the cheerleaders. At stake is funding that will either cover a robotics competition or new cheerleading uniformsbut not both. It's only going to get worse: after both parties are stripped of their funding on grounds of abominable misbehavior, Nate enrolls the club's robot in a battlebot competition in a desperate bid for prize money. Bad sportsmanship? Sure. Chainsaws? Why not. Running away from home on Thanksgiving to illicitly enter a televised robot death match? Of course! In Faith Erin Hicks' and Prudence Shen's world of high school class warfare and robot death matches, Nothing can possibly go wrong.

I loved this! Was surprised to see that it published in 2013 - which is imo before graphic novels really took off and am happy to see that it‘s about to be rereleased - because it‘s was such a hilarious, snarky, bonkers read that I‘m glad that it will find a new audience.

Eh, it was alright. I liked the themes, but the characters were too cliche, stereotypes that annoyed me. #ispybingo: eye, illustrated

Nothing really stood out to me in these high school shenanigans, but it was fun. I liked the competition between the cheer team and robotics team over the budget money (the principal really should have handled the situation differently), and the robot battles. The book starts with a brief shout-out from the author to girls in STEM that feels a bit weird since there is only one girl on the science team and she's a secondary character. #comics

On yet another lengthy drive today, so I came prepared. First book down, a bunch more to go! This was a cute little story of different teams who each need money...one for the National Robotics Competition and the other for cheerleading uniforms. When their first plan fails, they all band together to reach their goal.

Second library haul of vacation. This one comes from the Northern Onondaga Public Library. Brought the kids and it seems they have just as much fun in a NY library as they do in a NH library!! ❤️ (Its's fair to say mom does too haha)

AnnieReads It so much fun to check out new libraries. 7y

A convo w/my mother:
Me: Did you see my blog review of that graphic novel? I think you'd like it.
Her: It looked good, you know I don't really like graphic novels though.
Me: When have you ever read one?
Her: Well...you made me read that awful one..."
Me: *thinks*...NIMONA?!?!?
*facepalm facepalm facepalm*
Love her to death, but sometimes...?

When there's only enough money for either a robotics tournament or cheerleading uniforms, things get ugly fast. As in "smear campaign trespassing vandalism" ugly that culminates in a glorious Battle Bit tournament that hits the nostalgia bone. It's SO FUNNY, esp. since I've been on the short end of science v sports funding, but it ultimately becomes about teamwork w/a great moment when they come together as friends rather than stereotypes.
