Action Park
Action Park: Fast Times, Wild Rides, and the Untold Story of America's Most Dangerous Amusement Park | Jake Rossen, Andy Mulvihill
29 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
The outlandish, hilarious, terrifying, and almost impossible-to-believe story of the legendary, dangerous amusement park where millions were entertained and almost as many bruises were sustained, told through the eyes of the founder's son Often called "Accident Park," "Class Action Park," or "Traction Park," Action Park was an American icon. Entertaining more than a million people a year in the 1980s, the New Jersey-based amusement playland placed no limits on danger or fun, a monument to the anything-goes spirit of the era that left guests in control of their own adventures--sometimes with tragic results. Though it closed its doors in 1996 after nearly twenty years, it has remained a subject of constant fascination ever since, an establishment completely anathema to our modern culture of rules and safety. Action Park is the first-ever unvarnished look at the history of this DIY Disneyland, as seen through the eyes of Andy Mulvihill, the son of the park's idiosyncratic founder, Gene Mulvihill. From his early days testing precarious rides to working his way up to chief lifeguard of the infamous Wave Pool to later helping run the whole park, Andy's story is equal parts hilarious and moving, chronicling the life and death of a uniquely American attraction, a wet and wild 1980s adolescence, and a son's struggle to understand his father's quixotic quest to become the Walt Disney of New Jersey. Packing in all of the excitement of a day at Action Park, this is destined to be one of the most unforgettable memoirs of the year.

As someone who grew up going to Action Park and then going still to Mountaincreek, I loved this story. It was like getting to peak behind the curtain. It was awesome learning the truth behind all of the wild rides that you do compare injuries and experiences on like it‘s a rite of passage. I mean if you didn‘t almost die, were you really there?! The story of the family run business is as crazy as the rides and I loved every minute of it.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My favorite book in May was definitely the tagged one. It chronicles the almost-impossible-to-believe-but-it‘s-all-true story of an amusement park that broke ALL the rules with gleeful abandon. Stories I heard from Littens who went to the park made it even better. A must read if you enjoying jaw-dropping, entertaining nonfiction. Honorable mentions include a gorgeous graphic novel about the Dust Bowl & a MG fantasy.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Sounds great. 1y
squirrelbrain I bought this for hubby for Christmas but will definitely read it myself too! 1y

Imagine a completely bananas amusement park that has little concern for safety, near daily injuries, and drunken lunatics galavanting through. You have Action Park, a real amusement park in the 80s and 90s, remembered here by one of the sons of the founder. This book is a ton of fun and makes me kinda glad I never went there.

squirrelbrain There was a documentary called Class Action or similar; loved that, is this the same park? 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Yep, that‘s the one. The place was nuts! 1y
squirrelbrain Ooh, hubby loved that documentary too; I might see if the book is available in the UK for an Xmas pressie… thanks for reviewing it! 1y
MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain That documentary was NUTS! I never went to the amusement park but one of my sisters did. She came home with no skin on her elbow. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Meshell1313 Ahhh. So many childhood memories there. Rides were crazy and risky for sure! 1y

One of my latest bookclub reads. It was interesting and kept me turning the pages! I‘d never heard of this amusement park in NJ before and the owner was quite a character! Enjoyed the book, but full disclosure, really don‘t like the cover 🙈 Read it on my kindle so the cover wasn‘t in front of me each time I went to read it. 4⭐️

As someone who is the opposite of a thrill seeker (rules?!? yes please!!!) this place sounds absolutely terrifying…and marvelous and adventurous and wow oh wow do I find it hard to believe such a place existed in all its wild abandon as recently as it did. And for those Littens who went, I‘m so glad you made it out in one piece! A fascinating book about one man‘s driving ambition to giving people what they wanted—a rollicking good time.

Soubhiville I watched the documentary about this place- and I‘m with you! Terrifying! My husband spent a lot of time there as a kid and witnessed some really bad injuries. What a crazy park. 2y
TracyReadsBooks @Soubhiville So terrifying! I haven‘t watched the documentary yet but that‘s next. 2y

Another friend recommendation—one who tells me that as wild and crazy as the stories about this amusement park sound, they are in fact true. (I want to say she grew up in the area? Maybe even went a time or two?) anticipating a very entertaining book.

Cinfhen It‘s a real place!! I remember going with my overnight camp. The place was CRAZZZZYYY!! There‘s a documentary - Class Action Park. It‘s nuts! 2y
vivastory What @Cinfhen said! 2y

TracyReadsBooks @Cinfhen You went with your overnight camp? That must have been an adventure! I didn‘t know about the documentary—I‘ll definitely have to watch it. Just one chapter in and the book is every bit as entertaining as I thought it would be! 2y
TracyReadsBooks @vivastory Have you read the book? It‘s wild. Really entertaining! 2y
vivastory I did! I read one weekend last summer & immediately watched the documentary. It's wild! 2y
TracyReadsBooks @vivastory I for sure need to watch the documentary now that I know it‘s a thing! 2y
Cinfhen Yes, all the camps used to go to Action Park. My hubby remembers going there too!! Definitely watch the documentary/ it‘s hilarious 2y
Meshell1313 Loved going to “Accident Park” - especially when it was rebranded “Mountain Creek.” The rides were absolutely insanely dangerous. Can‘t wait to check out this book! 2y

I LOVED this book! I grew up in the 1980's in West Milford, New Jersey, which was only about a half an hour away from Action Park. I knew that people were always getting hurt there, but what I wasn't aware of was the intentionally libertarian (negligent) attitude toward safety, the fact that danger was a sort of romanticized philosophy embedded in the park. This book is darkly hysterical, and if I hadn't been there myself, I wouldn't believe it.

Combat experience was handy...just to serve as a lifeguard in the Wave Pool. Let that sink in.

I explained that, if we couldn't see the bottom of the pool, that meant we couldn't see any people at the bottom of the pool.
"Andy," he said, shaking his head. "You can't see the bottom of the ocean, either."
"So?"
"So, that doesn't mean you stop people from swimming in it if they want."

Guests riding down an asbestos chute on a plastic cart could choose whether to adopt a leisurely pace or tear down at 30 miles per hour and risk hitting a sharp turn that would eject them into the woods. They decided when to dive off a cliff and whether to aim for open water or their friend's head. They could listen when the attendants told them to stay in the speedboats, or they could tumble into the marsh water and get bit by a snapping turtle.

Suet624 Hahaha. Where is this? I can relate after going flying off a mountain slide. 3y
keithmalek @Suet624 This was in Vernon, NJ. I grew up about a half an hour from there. This place was insane. 3y

keithmalek @Suet624 To illustrate just how insane it was, the creator of Action Park invited Donald Trump there to see if he wanted to invest in it, and Trump thought that it was too crazy. Too crazy for Donald Trump. Let that sink in for a moment. 3y
Suet624 Damn! I need to read this book! 3y

I grew up in New Jersey. I saw ads for Action Park all the time. I wanted to go so badly. My parents never took us. I am so glad now. Details of the insanity will make you laugh and make you glad it's not the 1970s anymore.

EclecticBookLover I saw the HBO Max doc and it was insane!!!! I'm glad it wasn't really a thing in my area of the NJ. Too far to make the trip worth it. 3y

This book is like a mix of GLOW, and Animal House. By turns hilarious, disgusting, serious, and just wholely unbelievable I loved it. It details a amusement park from 1977-1997 by the founder‘s son. Stories include: The Alpine which is basically concrete surfing, water rides that rip off clothes, go carts that go 50mph, and the endless injuries.
I‘d never want to visit but Action Park is fascinating to read about (nostalgia alone pulls you in)

Ncostell I immediately had to Google this to see if I had been there as a kid as I grew up in NJ and remember the concrete alpine slide. I don‘t think this was the one I went to but it was a similar place. I‘m sure we were taking our lives into our own hands there now that I look back on it! 4y
TheDaysGoBy How cool! I listened to an episode about this on The Dollop. It‘s an American history podcast hosted by two comedians. Highly recommend if you‘ve never listened 4y
DogEaredBooks @TheDaysGoBy I will have to listen to that! I have been spending my free time learning more so this sounds like a great addition to my now (mild) obsession with this park! 4y
DogEaredBooks @Ncostell if you read it I would love to hear your thoughts as someone with a personal connection to the area. I can only say that 70s and 80s theme parks sound like no joke compared to today! 4y
Ncostell I‘ll have to check it out! 4y

I don‘t know why but this is the book I was looking for. So far a memorable line: “he called me ‘college boy‘ because he once saw me reading a book”

What even is this book?!
