And now we‘re at the completely obvious next part of this banana pants story: when Purdue Pharma decides to hire Rudy Giuliani (who the author takes pains to remind us used to be at least mildly respected in the early 2000s)

MicheleinPhilly I had a good laugh about that when I read Dopesick earlier this year. 4w

God, Arthur Sackler (and brothers) are just the worst 🤢

Current cringe inducing is not even related to his sketchy businesses - mostly his weird romantic life (nothing too weird just typical rich male disregard for his wife - and second wife - and third wife)

Everything he did is just ~~ ughhh~~ 🤮

DogEaredBooks Also as a museum nerd I didn‘t expect so much about the museums but I am here for it! His art collecting antics are also not surprising but leave that classic slimy feeling quintessential of rich (white) people doing whatever the hell they want 1mo

Just saw this on Goodreads. I‘d bet it‘ll be a #BoTM as well. I own but haven‘t read this series but it is definitely moving up the list

JenlovesJT47 Yay!! I‘m so excited! I loved Practical Magic when I finally read it last year and the prequel was great as well. Still haven‘t read the other prequel that goes way back because I‘ve been saving it - didn‘t want the series to be over yet. So now I can finally crack that one open soon. I love her writing style. 🤗 5mo

I‘m crying from a letter introduction. Oh boy. 💔

Librariana "I refuse to write dark and heavy just because the world sometimes feels that way." OOOOPH!! That GOT ME! ? Gut punch... truly. But really... this entire letter is a gut punch! So incredibly sad and tragic to lose your partner to this horrible disease! ???? 6mo

This book is hilarious. This quote made me literally laugh out loud and I had to share.
Context: the original technophobe wrote his 1400 page book outlining why the printing press the worst. This is the authors‘ (joke) response about his complaint that his fellow monks would made excuses to get out of writing books to labor outside.

It‘s always funny to me to see the people acting fairly similar to today but hundreds of years ago.

How can you not love this book. I want to hang all of the pages up all over my home - art and trivia and food, oh my the perfect combo.

I got a personalized book and I have an extra that I can‘t decide who to gift to (sister, nephew, friend) but I know they would all love it.

It feels weird to love a book about the racism that happens to black women in the US. But I do. I love this book. I listened to the audiobook and it was perfect. Amber is as hilarious as always and the stories that happen to Lacey are crazy and told so well I felt part of their (wonderful) family hearing these stories at the table/group chat. READ THIS BOOK!!

So I am loving this book but every so often. I notice this “cut x lines from this page”. I‘m sure it‘s editing notes that weren‘t removed but it feels like a secret code and if I do it in the right order I‘ll get a cool poem or a treasure map.

Mehso-so

My main point in posting this is TW: there is A LOT of violence against dogs in this book. I get that it‘s the culture of the area at the time but with my current headspace I probably wouldn‘t have read it now if I had know.
This book had parts that were laugh out loud hilarious (my favorite was his bringing home a fish on a bike) and it was written in 2004 (at this point almost 20 years ago). But this is not a book for the squeamish.

I can see why this has been described as Tiger King for flowers. The Orchid obsessives in this book have similar fascinating yet disturbing pull.

I‘m not done yet but it‘s been really interesting so far. Also the narrator has the best voice for this. She sounds intrigued but baffled. (And sounds so familiar).

MicheleinPhilly I love the movie Adaptation. 1y
SamAnne I thought the movie was the best!!!! A crazy Charlie Kaufman film with Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper and Nic Cage. Doesn‘t get any better than that. Called Adaptation. 1y
DogEaredBooks @SamAnne @MicheleinPhilly I had seen mention of the movie but I didn‘t know what it was called. I‘ll have to watch it now! 1y

No offense to any summer savor-ers out there but I am ready for Fall and Halloween. I scoped out my library and pulled some cozy Fall/Halloween themed books to get a kick start (and watch all the Ghostbusters and Halloweentown movies). Also open to any recommendations for cozy/paranormal fall/Halloween books!

This book is like a mix of GLOW, and Animal House. By turns hilarious, disgusting, serious, and just wholely unbelievable I loved it. It details a amusement park from 1977-1997 by the founder‘s son. Stories include: The Alpine which is basically concrete surfing, water rides that rip off clothes, go carts that go 50mph, and the endless injuries.
I‘d never want to visit but Action Park is fascinating to read about (nostalgia alone pulls you in)

Ncostell I immediately had to Google this to see if I had been there as a kid as I grew up in NJ and remember the concrete alpine slide. I don‘t think this was the one I went to but it was a similar place. I‘m sure we were taking our lives into our own hands there now that I look back on it! 1y
TheDaysGoBy How cool! I listened to an episode about this on The Dollop. It‘s an American history podcast hosted by two comedians. Highly recommend if you‘ve never listened 1y
DogEaredBooks @TheDaysGoBy I will have to listen to that! I have been spending my free time learning more so this sounds like a great addition to my now (mild) obsession with this park! 1y
DogEaredBooks @Ncostell if you read it I would love to hear your thoughts as someone with a personal connection to the area. I can only say that 70s and 80s theme parks sound like no joke compared to today! 1y
Ncostell I‘ll have to check it out! 1y

I finally got around to this book which was gifted to me in September (thank you @nelehelen !)

While I wish I had read it sooner I think right now I am in the perfect mind space for it.
Divided into sections it focuses first on the murder case(s) then the lawyer then Harper Lee. I found the first two sections the most interesting, but the Harper Lee section was eye opening.

Working through BOTM backlog and I loved this one.

Following multiple people a story of a musician and a mommy group and the surprising secrets they all hold.

I would call it a kinda thriller? Like a mellow Big Little Lies (maybe it‘s the mom group and secrets vibe).

Megabooks I agree about a mellow BLL. I enjoyed it too! 2y

This book is one of my favorites for the year. It‘s warm, thoughtful and inspiring. I see the comparisons to Hillbilly Elegy (this is better) and Educated. It‘s the same style of book- a memoir but also about the larger context. She outlines the strengths and accepting the faults of Hill people with a focus on the experiences of women especially.

Definitely recommending to everyone (and my book club)

Things I learned at work this week: this is called “tree calf binding”. Water is brushed on and then chemicals are sprinkled over and when it‘s all said and done it looks like a variation of this. Pretty neat.
