I‘ve seen a lot of conflicting reviews of this one- which makes sense- it opens with narrator Roan, 15 and suffering from a bladder infection. It‘s not the first time, and the reader is quickly absorbed in this deeply disturbing story of her abusive and manipulative father interwoven with their horse farm and the competitive world. It‘s horrifying and vividly written. An impressive debut but one that certainly won‘t be for every reader!

This book came with a content warning cover. Even knowing that the subject matter would be difficult, I went in with a very open mind. Unfortunately, this is the closest thing to literal trauma porn I‘ve ever read. There were a couple things the author did well, but the book overall, the ending especially, really does a disservice to the real survivors of such horrific abuse. Avoid.

The writing was excellent, specially as I believe this was a debut novel. I will say that as the warning states there were some very difficult/upsetting parts to read but I do like books that bring out strong emotions.
