Stuffed and Starved
Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System - Revised and Updated | Raj Patel
6 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
Completely updated and revised edition of one of the most widely-praised food books of recent years. Its a perverse fact of modern life: There are more starving people in the world than ever before, while there are also more people who are overweight. To find out how we got to this point and what we can do about it, Raj Patel launched a comprehensive investigation into the global food network. It took him from the colossal supermarkets of California to Indias wrecked paddy-fields and Africas bankrupt coffee farms, while along the way he ate genetically engineered soy beans and dodged flying objects in the protestor-packed streets of South Korea. What he found was shocking, from the false choices given us by supermarkets to a global epidemic of farmer suicides, and real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa. Yet he also found great cause for hopein international resistance movements working to create a more democratic, sustainable and joyful food system. Going beyond ethical consumerism, Patel explains, from seed to store to plate, the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of both farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance.

The author has actually worked fro the World Trade Organization and the World Bank, both are mentioned (generally, not in a good way) in this book. There is a lot to take in. Mostly interesting stuff here. He does end with some suggestions to try to make things better, but the sad part is corporations that make a lot of money won‘t go for it, cont in comments...

LibraryCin and though you‘d like to think governments will step up, over and over that doesn‘t happen with money from those large corporations funding the politicians 2y

Does anyone know of any indie bookstores that have online shopping options too? I think I need more time with this book than the library allows but there are no indie bookstores near me at all. Zip. It's wild that a city as big as mine doesn't have any, but c'est la vie. I know I can get this on Amazon or at B&N but if I can get it at an indie bookstore online I'll go for it. Thank you!! #srslyilovethegetindiemvmt #butaccessibilityisabigissue

Only on the intro, but he has laid out so much real talk already that I can tell this is going to be a very, very informative book. Why are so many people overweight & stuffed yet so many people also starving in the world? #therealquestion #seriousreadingday

JanuarieTimewalker13 I've often wondered that ! 8y

Last stop for #bookstoretourism was Monkey Wrench Books. This volunteer-run bookstore focuses on social and economic justice. It was a good ending point, for sure. There are 2 orher indie bookstores I didn't visit: BookPeople (cause I go there all the time and everyone knows about it) & Fifth Dimension Bbooks (it's a mobile bookstore that I can never seem to find). A lot of fun was had - and now I have books for #biblioweekend 😆

Yournewfriendsams What a fun tour you've had the past couple days! Love it ☺️ 8y

I've been dicking around in Hartford and New Haven the last two days apartment hunting, which might be the most stressful and impossible thing to do on the planet. Jfc. Crashed on a friend's couch in Hartford last night and photographed her+roommate's bookshelf 📚 (this book sounds super interesting too hence why I listed it, check it out)
