“On deep tracks, the tears rolled down her old cheeks . But she had smiled so peculiarly for seventy-seven years that they suddenly swerved wildly towards her ears and hung like glass from each lobe.”
What a great visual!! From the short story Faith in the Afternoon, in this collection by Grace Paley.
“$32 even and you‘ve owed it for eighteen years.”
This is for two books. I wonder how much I‘d owe if I did that today!
There‘s a Little Free Library in town near son‘s piano lessons, and from it, I scored this short story collection by Grace Paley. I did put a book in the LFL. I forgot to take The Luminaries with me to read tonight!
ETA: this is the beginning of the short story “Wants”.
"[Men] did think they were bringing a rare gift, whereas it was just sex, which is common like bread, though essential."
"The doctor said, "You can't bleed forever. Either you run out of blood or you stop. No one bleeds forever."
Continuing my goal of reading/re-reading books I own and letting them out into the wild.
I want to read more Paley. A lot more. Like, every story she ever published type of more. This used book is used in name only - it was in pristine condition for $5. Winning!
"So foolish is the true love when responded to."
Happy birthday, Grace Paley. You were a radical, wizardly woman.
