End of Everything: (astrophysically Speaking)
End of Everything: (astrophysically Speaking) | Katie Mack
12 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
From one of the most dynamic rising stars in astrophysics, an accessible and eye-opening look at five ways the universe could end, and the mind-blowing lessons each scenario reveals about the most important concepts in cosmology. We know the universe had a beginning. With the Big Bang, it expanded from a state of unimaginable density to an all-encompassing cosmic fireball to a simmering fluid of matter and energy, laying down the seeds for everything from black holes to one rocky planet orbiting a star near the edge of a spiral galaxy that happened to develop life as we know it. But what happens to the universe at the end of the story? And what does it mean for us now? Dr. Katie Mack has been contemplating these questions since she was a young student, when her astronomy professor informed her the universe could end at any moment, in an instant. This revelation set her on the path toward theoretical astrophysics. Now, with lively wit and humor, she takes us on a mind-bending tour through five of the cosmos's possible finales: the Big Crunch, Heat Death, the Big Rip, Vacuum Decay (the one that could happen at any moment!), and the Bounce. Guiding us through cutting-edge science and major concepts in quantum mechanics, cosmology, string theory, and much more, The End of Everything is a wildly fun, surprisingly upbeat ride to the farthest reaches of all that we know.

I am really glad to have read this book because it unveils heaps of information about the cosmos, the space, time, planets, and galaxies in relation to humanity and the laws of nature. Katie Mack has a way of making daunting concepts accessible and ultimately fascinating. Her style is superb! She provides more questions to extrapolate our understanding, or the lack thereof, of the origins of the universe. I may not have understood everything 👇

thevagabondlawyer from the Big Bang Theory to Black Hole, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Quantum Mechanics, Heat Death, Big Rip or vacuum day but I gained enough that I am hungry for more. One thing is certain: everything must end, including our own world. When that time comes, I hope we have not only lived the life we wanted but we also have celebrated the wonders of our universe. 😊👊 4y
Twainy I recommended the audio to my library a while ago. I‘m glad it‘s good!! 4y
thevagabondlawyer @Twainy oh would be nice to listen via audiobook. I'll find one. Thanks 👍 4y

BillBlume Glad to see you loved this book, too. I can‘t wait to see what Katie Mack does next. 4y
thevagabondlawyer @BillBlume Thanks Bill. Any book recommendations on similar theme/topic? 4y
BillBlume @thevagabondlawyer I also enjoyed Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. Not sure if you‘ve already read that. Honestly, I could do with something new in this vein to read, as well. 4y
thevagabondlawyer @BillBlume Great I have it on Kindle. Thanks. Now I am reading The Future of Humanity by Michio Kaku. I am loving it. 4y
BillBlume @thevagabondlawyer thanks! I‘ll check that out. 4y

When I was in high school, I used to ponder then end of the universe and wonder whether things would end suddenly. Lucky for us, only one scenario Mack shares would cause that. 😉

What Mack does well is build on her explanation of physics principles as she teaches you about the universe. That said, this was denser to me than your average pop sci book b/c she relies more on theories than concrete descriptions of them. I‘ll stick with biology. 3⭐️

Cinfhen Great review and I‘ll #TakeAPass 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I didn‘t think this would be a good fit for you. 👍🏻 4y

Guess I‘ll be reading about physics! #IndecisiveWednesday

I love having a way to overcome my indecisiveness!

dariazeoli Someone needs to invent a Plinko board for TBR indecisiveness. Because I apparently spend more time playing games to figure out what to read than reading 😁 4y
Megabooks @dariazeoli that would be AWESOME!! And yes, when I‘m indecisive games are great! 4y

Had a really good reading night!

I‘m reading the tagged book in print for #sciencebookbyawoman for #booked2021. So far I‘m really enjoying it even though light-based physics is my worst science subject. (Only B I got in a pre-vet science!)

Also, why didn‘t I read Priestdaddy on audio for the #botmchallenge back in 2017?? Such a great #audiobook so far! She has a novel coming out in February.

#currentlyreading

Cinfhen I don‘t know why but I couldn‘t get into Priestdaddy 🤷🏼‍♀️Glad you‘re loving both your current books 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just find her dysfunctional relationship with her parents funny right now! 😉😉 4y
Cinfhen I can see the humor in that 4y

emilyhaldi Ooohhh thanks for the heads up about her new book! 4y
emilyhaldi .... Priestdaddy seems like it would be an awesome book on audio!! Glad you liked it 😁 4y
MsMelissa I‘m looking forward to reading The End of Everything. Can‘t wait for your review. 4y
Reviewsbylola Priestdaddy on audio would be awesome. Good idea! 4y
Megabooks @emilyhaldi I‘m excited about her new book! I first saw it on a bookstore‘s Instagram last fall. It comes out the day after I get my Libro.fm credit, so that‘s probably where it‘s going to be spent (to support that bookstore, too)! 4y
Megabooks @Book_Fiend_Melissa it is really fascinating, and I find I‘m much more engaged with the material than other astrophysics books I‘ve read, including popular ones like 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it‘s definitely awesome! 4y
Magpiegem I loved Priestdaddy so much on Audio I found it unexpectedly touching in places. Enjoy! 4y
MsMelissa I‘m glad to read you feel that it‘s better than some other similar books. That‘s encouraging. 4y

What do we know about how the universe will end? This warm and enthusiastic book takes readers on several journeys into potential far futures, along the way providing lucid and funny explorations of the history of the universe, particle physics, entropy, dark energy, and how exactly researchers build knowledge about phenomena that occur at distances and scales way beyond human experience.

I finally really finished it! I‘d been dragging my feet, because I didn‘t want it to end. Dr. Katie Mack has penned an enjoyable, funny, sometimes touching pop-sci intro to cosmology/physics that explores the various theories of how it the universe might end. I also learned the author & I have overlapping tastes in scifi/fantasy, based on the chapter epigraphs and use of Star Trek:The Next Generation to illustrate a concept. #ARC

akaGingerK I bought both my dad and my sister their own copies for Christmas, and I seriously considered it for one of the cousins. It‘s really good! 4y

Didn‘t realize I hadn‘t posted my review for Katie Mack‘s book The End of Everything. I loved it. Mack‘s voice for this book is excellent. There are times that some of the info got over my head, but for the most part, Mack does a nice job bringing the astrophysics behind cosmic destruction down to a level that‘s easy to understand. Definitely recommend this book. #nonfiction #astrophysics #WeesaGonnaDie

Just finished reading in THE END OF EVERYTHING (ASTROPHYSICALLY SPEAKING) by Katie Mack about what a “Big Rip” would be like, if that‘s how we all go “bye bye.” 😳😳😳 Fortunately, it‘s not likely to happen for tens of billions of years. Whew!

I love that Katie Mack quotes my favorite author in her book. I get an added kick out of this, since I just finished reading N.K. Jemisin‘s THE CITY WE BECAME before starting to read THE END OF EVERYTHING.
