ArtCurious: Stories of the Unexpected, Slightly Odd, and Strangely Wonderful in Art History | Jennifer Dasal
4 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
A wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational dive into art history as you've never seen it before, from the host of the beloved ArtCurious podcast We're all familiar with the works of Claude Monet, thanks in no small part to the ubiquitous reproductions of his water lilies on umbrellas, handbags, scarves, and dorm-room posters. But did you also know that Monet and his cohort were trailblazing rebels whose works were originally deemed unbelievably ugly and vulgar? And while you probably know the tale of Vincent van Gogh's suicide, you may not be aware that there's pretty compelling evidence that the artist didn't die by his own hand but was accidentally killed--or even murdered. Or how about the fact that one of Andy Warhol's most enduring legacies involves Caroline Kennedy's moldy birthday cake and a collection of toenail clippings? ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history, revealing some of the strangest, funniest, and most fascinating stories behind the world's great artists and masterpieces. Through these and other incredible, weird, and wonderful tales, ArtCurious presents an engaging look at why art history is, and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.

This book was written by a curator of the NC Art Museum, which is located in my city. She‘s the host of a podcast of the same name but most all of this content is new. I enjoyed it as someone with an amateur interest in art history.

Librarybelle Sounds really interesting! 3y
MallenNC @Librarybelle I kept thinking it was helpful trivia for dinner party chatter! 3y

These are the four nonfiction podcasts I‘ve listened to the most during Nonfiction November. ArtCurious is hosted by a curator at the NC Museum of Art, which is right here in Raleigh. So I think of it as a hometown project! I haven‘t read her book yet but I‘d like to.

I was a little stuck with this book until I switched to audio. Definitely read the #audiobook!

These are fascinating stories of the art and artists that have shaped Western culture. She debates whether Van Gogh‘s death was a suicide. She talks about the revolutionary ideas of the impressionist and the woman 🤯🤯 who may have been the first abstract artist. She has interesting stories about Leonardo DaVinci, Pollock, and Warhol, too. Recommend.

Megabooks An update on my #bookspinbingo board. This is a #freespace. @TheAromaofBooks 👍🏻📚🎧 4y

Cinfhen You‘re really slaying the #BookSpinBingo board 🙌🏻⚔️ How are you feeling? How‘s mom & dad? 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen i‘m hitting the end of the day Covid wall. I start feeling really sick around 6 PM and then usually I‘m in bed by 9 PM. Fortunately mom and dad still aren‘t sick. They have to quarantine until the 15th. If I‘m better by the 11th I can go out but if I‘m not better I have to be relatively symptom-free for 24 hours before I can go out. 4y
Cinfhen Sounds like you‘re winning the battle 🙌🏻stay strong, my friend!!!!! Thinking of you...always 💜 (edited) 4y
