I've been slacking on reviews lately because I've been so tired, but I can't not say something this book. It's a quiet, soft, sweet, heartfelt, sexy, animal-filled romance featuring probably the most accurate depiction of social anxiety disorder I've ever encountered. Parrish seems to have a way with writing characters who feel real and authentic in their true-to-life experiences of very difficult things. 👇
This book is so cute. Jack breaks his leg and meets Simon through an app to match pet walkers to pets. Simon has always liked animals better than most people because they don't care if your words get jammed up inside you. The menagerie of pets is bigger than the on page humans.
Roan Parrish is so, so good at showing how much WORK relationships can be. Simon lives with intense anxiety. Jack‘s reeling from a betrayal. If they want to be together, they need to find ways to accommodate each others‘ emotional truths. It ain‘t always easy, and sometimes it‘s beyond stressful for reader and characters alike, but it‘s very well done. I loved it awfully much.
Plus, there‘re tons of well-cared-for animals in the mix. Squee!
I forgot to share my #bookreport yesterday! Poop.
Anyways: I read and loved BETTER THAN PEOPLE. Full review coming soon.
I‘m sorry to say I abandoned THE RAGE OF DRAGONS 300 pages in. Too little character development in an expected plot.
And I‘m about 170 pages into ORACLE, which I love but expect to spend a loooooong time with because it‘s 770 pages and I‘m not in a super readerly mood.
Sleepy!Casey would like you to know BETTER THAN PEOPLE is great so far. The anxiety rep‘s intense enough that it‘s not always a comfortable read, but it‘s got DOGS and ART and FAMILY STUFF. He and I both approve.
Friends, I‘m all bummed out after yet another far-in bail. Here‘s hoping I can move past it with Roan Parrish‘s forthcoming book, a gimlet, and a little outdoor time with Casey on this 33° evening.
(Casey, of course, broke his adorable pose the moment I lined up the shot. This was the best of the retakes.)
