Growing Up at Grossinger's
Growing Up at Grossinger's | Tania Grossinger
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
"To be devoured in one non-stop gulp...fascinating reading."--The New York Post From 1919 to 1986, Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel provided a summer retreat from the city heat for New York's Jews, and entertained the great, the near-great, and the not so great, Jews and Gentiles alike. A melting pot of the Borscht Belt, sports, and show-biz worlds, loyal visitors included Red Buttons, Rocky Marciano, Eddie Fisher, and Jackie Robinson. Tania Grossinger grew up there. In her fascinating insider's account of life in the hospitality industry, she sheds light on how hotel children keep up with the frenetic pace of life, and how they come to grips with the outside world (which intrudes now and again), sex (happening in every room), and, occasionally, their intellectual interests. Growing Up at Grossinger's is both a wonderful coming-of-age story and a sentimental reading of a chapter of the Jewish experience in America that has now closed. 25 b/w photographs. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Mehso-so

A memoir from Tania Grossinger, whose mother was hostess at the famous hotel. She describes her experience growing up at the hotel and her struggles with fitting in with the family but then also adapting to the real world once she gets older. She mentions many famous names from the heyday that might mean more to others who are older but went over my head. It's an interesting perspective written in the '70s as the Catskills experience was changing

Tania lost her father at a young age and she moved to the renowned Grossinger resort in NY owned by her relatives where her charismatic mother took a job as a hostess. As I loved the setting of Dirty Dancing and the summer resort in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel this book did not disappoint with Tania‘s front row reminiscences of big celebrities of the time and the inside look at running such a beloved vacation getaway.

kspenmoll Good to see you again, friend! Hope you & your family are healthy. Happy New Year- 2y

This was a fun listen. Tania Grossinger, a cousin to the Catskills hotelier family, moved from LA with her widowed mom to upstate NY to become a permanent resident at the premier Jewish resort. Grossinger‘s was an iconic destination for East Coast Jews from the 1920‘s until mid 2000‘s. Like Eloise at the Plaza, Tania had the cabins of Grossinger‘s as her home. Very nostalgic for me ~ Lou Goldstein and his famous Simon Says, The Pink 🐘Bar 🙌🏻💕

Totally looking forward to this one!! The real life inspiration for Dirty Dancing and Last Summer at the Golden Hotel 🤩#Audio

DebinHawaii I bought this one on a Kindle Deal a while back but it‘s languishing in my #TBR stack. Looking forward to hear what you think. 🤗 3y
Cinfhen Im nearly done. For me it‘s a fun throwback to another time, which I both vividly recall from my parents & grandparents photos and stories plus my own memories of time spent at Grossinger‘s. It‘s a pleasant listen / a bit mad men mixed with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel @DebinHawaii 3y
