All Together Now
All Together Now: A Newfoundlander's Light Tales for Heavy Times | Alan Doyle
9 posts | 10 read
One of Newfoundland's funniest and most beloved storytellers offers his cure for the Covid blues. Is there a more sociable province than Newfoundland and Labrador? Or anywhere in Canada with a greater reputation for coming to the rescue of those in need? At this time of Covid, singer, songwriter and bestselling author Alan Doyle is feeling everyone's pain. Off the road and spending more days at home than he has since he was a child hawking cod tongues on the wharfs of Petty Harbour, he misses the crowds and companionship of performing across the country and beyond. But most of all he misses the cheery clamour of pubs in his hometown, where one yarn follows another so quickly "you have to be as ready as an Olympian at the start line to get your tale in before someone is well into theirs already." We're all experiencing our own version of that deprivation, and Alan, one of Newfoundland's finest storytellers, wants to offer a little balm. All Together Now is a gathering in book form--a virtual Newfoundland pub. There are adventures in foreign lands, including an apparently filthy singalong in Polish (well, he would have sung along if he'd understood the language), a real-life ghost story involving an elderly neighbour, a red convertible and a clown horn, a potted history of his social drinking, and heartwarming reminiscences from another past world, childhood--all designed to put a smile on the faces of the isolated-addled. Alan Doyle has never been in better form--nor more welcome. As he says about this troubling time: "We get through it. We do what has to be done. Then, we celebrate. With the best of them."

I listened to the audio read by him, and I think that‘s the way this story should be “read”. He is telling the stories as if he‘s in a pub, and one of them, in particular – I just don‘t see how it would translate on paper. It was the story of “dying laughing” and I was! The way he tells it – with his own laughter (fake laughter, but he does it so well...) – is just incredible and the laughter is so infectious! Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Other stories focused on Newfoundland itself, as well as some of his travels with GBS and the other famous people they met. It‘s fun to hear how starstruck a star themselves can be sometimes. One of the stories just didn‘t interest me much, but the rest were really good, so 4 stars, overall, for the book, but the extra ¼ star (as I do) for an amazing audio book 12mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⚡
Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle is delightful to me in a way that only a fellow small-town-Atlantic-Canadian can be. As advertised on the cover, this book is a lighthearted collection of personal experiences, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Doyle read the stories in his native Newfoundland accent.

TheLudicReader Which Atlantic town are you from? I live in Saint John. 😀 3y
Kris10H @TheLudicReader Yarmouth, NS. I traveled through Saint John many times on my way to Fredericton (I went to STU and UNB).😊 3y

I'm a bit late with my #AwesomeApril update. I managed to squeeze in this 5th book and it was excellent. It's also my 5th book for #ShutdownRound3.
@Andrew65 @DieAReader

This book is a collection of stories by Newfoundlander Alan Doyle, front man for the folk rock band Great Big Sea. The tales are heartwarming and hilarious, offered by Doyle as a way to counter the isolation of the pandemic.

DieAReader Fantastic🎉🍾 I look forward to reading this one. 3y
kwmg40 @DieAReader Thanks! I definitely recommend this book. The audiobook version is narrated by Doyle himself. 3y
DieAReader @kwmg40 Even better! I‘ll take a look for it (Libby is great for audiobooks btw😉 Much more user friendly compared to Overdrive)! Thanks♥️ 3y

kwmg40 @DieAReader That's a long wait! However, it's a very short book, so I expect readers will finish it and return it quickly, and you may get it much earlier than expected. 3y

Alan Doyle fronts one of my favourite bands, Great Big Sea. They and he put on a great, fun, boisterous show. He is also charming and witty ... a Canadian treasure. (I have a bit of a crush!) He‘s also a good, engaging writer. In this book of light tales during hard times, he imagines himself in the corner of a favourite St. John‘s pub, talking and sharing stories. This series of memories made me smile and laugh out loud. Delightful. 4/5

Loved it! Read it in one sitting. Alan Doyle is my favourite musician and he is also an excellent writer. I enjoyed this book as much as his previous two. Its as if he is sitting in your living room telling you the story.

Chrissyreadit Hi Shelley- I need to email you with some questions, but I do not have your email. Can you email me at chrissyreadit@gmail.com 3y
