The Fate of Mercy Alban
The Fate of Mercy Alban | Wendy Webb
19 posts | 29 read | 44 to read
Grace Alban has spent more than twenty years avoiding her childhood home, the stately Alban House on the shores of Lake Superior, for reasons she would rather forget. But when her mother's unexpected death brings Grace and her teenage daughter back, she finds more is haunting the halls and passageways of Alban House than her own personal demons.Long-buried family secrets, a packet of old love letters, and a lost manuscript plunge Grace into a decades-old mystery about a scandalous party at Alban House, when a world-famous author took his own life and Grace's aunt disappeared without a trace. The night has been shrouded in secrecy by the powerful Alban family for all of these years. Her mother intended to tell the truth about that night to a reporter on the very day she died--could it have been murder? Or was she a victim of the supposed Alban curse? Grace soon realizes her family secrets tangle and twist as darkly as the mansion's secret passages. With the help of the disarmingly kind--and attractive--Reverend Matthew Parker, Grace must uncover the truth about her home and its curse before she and her daughter become the next victims.

Quite familiar if you‘ve read more of Webb‘s material, but creepy nonetheless. Then again, I may have a bias towards finding terrifying little girls creepier than other would.

Great ghostly mystery book, I enjoyed it very much. Lots of turns and twist. Murder, missing and love all in one book.

Though definitely scary, this book was more of a mystery than a ghost story. Not that there were no ghosts, but the beginning spectres held none of the horror of the living. However, I love her writing as it is so engaging. I'm driving back in for more at the library this afternoon.

ljuliel I‘ve not read anything by her. I‘ll put her on my watchlist. The cover is really pretty ! (edited) 6y

A creepy tale of twins, madness and murder, with a little love story thrown in.

I found this book through a “blind date,” where the bookstore wrapped the books so you couldn‘t tell what it was and just gave a one sentence description.

This one said “a good read for a dark and stormy night.” I was intrigued, bought it sight unseen and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Just enough ghosts and supernatural elements without getting too out there. Read it if you need a scary tale.

RaimeyGallant I've gotta try this blind date thing! And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. I started this for the old house, stayed for the family secrets ... and then got totally freaked out. It was gothic and mysterious and exactly what I was looking for. Although I might have read it at the wrong time of year. It definitely added a different dimension to last Christmas break. 😂 #scaryreads #allhallowsread

BookBabe Oooh! Those are all reasons I would read this...sold! 🙌🏻 9y

Good, competently written and suspenseful horror that's perfect for October reading. Nice mix of creepy, scary stuff and warm, domestic stuff.

This is a great modern gothic mystery. If you like creepy mansions, secret passageways, and dark family secrets you will love this book. I read it on a rainy night and it was perfect.
