Heather Has Two Mommies
Heather Has Two Mommies | Lesléa Newman
4 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
"Each page is artfully and distinctly rendered to be a visual depiction of the beauty of joy and diversity." -- School Library Journal Heather's favorite number is two. She has two arms, two legs, two pets--and two mommies. When Heather goes to school for the first time, someone asks her about her daddy, but Heather doesn't have a daddy. Then something interesting happens. When Heather and her classmates all draw pictures of their families, not one drawing is the same. This delightful edition for a new generation of young readers features fresh illustrations by Laura Cornell and an updated story by Lesléa Newman.

I read the new edition of this one, originally published in 1989…this has been banned and challenged so many times since original publication. Heather feels incredibly loved by her two mommies. When she starts school, she becomes concerned that she may be the only one in class without a daddy. The message: families are made up of those who love each other. #BBRC #PictureBook Letter H

Another of the most notoriously banned children‘s books that I‘d never read before. For something that stirred up so much controversy this book struck me as just lovely and sweet. I‘m waiting for the word where people read this to their kids to teach them about starting kindergarten, not about “alternative†families. #BBRCPictureBookLetterH @LibrarianRyan

I can't let this challenge go by without reading at least 1 banned book. Heather Has Two Mommies received a lot of attacks and controversy in the 90's, you bet my parents never let me read it. 😡 This is the 25th anniv. edition w/ updated illustrations & shortened text. I'd like to track down a copy of the original edition. On a side note, the dog in this pic cracked me up! It continues to be an important book.

Emilymdxn I didn‘t note the title of the book properly at first and thought the book was banned because of the misbehaving dog haha 😂😂 5y
