Widowish
Widowish: A Memoir | Melissa Gould
5 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Melissa Gould's hopeful memoir of grieving outside the box and the surprising nature of love. When Melissa Gould's husband, Joel, was unexpectedly hospitalized, she could not imagine how her life was about to change. Overwhelmed with uncertainty as Joel's condition tragically worsened, she offered him the only thing she could: her love and devotion. Her dedication didn't end with his death. Left to resume life without her beloved husband and raise their young daughter on her own, Melissa soon realized that her and Joel's love lived on. Melissa found she didn't fit the typical mold of widowhood or meet the expectations of mourning. She didn't look like a widow or act like a widow, but she felt like one. Melissa was widowish. Melissa's personal journey through grief and beyond includes unlikely inspiration from an evangelical preacher, the calming presence of some Real Housewives, and the unexpected attention of a charming musician. A modern take on loss, Widowish illuminates the twists of fate that break our world, the determination that keeps us moving forward, and the surprises in life we never see coming.

I‘m a little hesitant to review this because grief is different for everyone, and reviewing memoirs seems judgey. But at times this felt very privileged, which I admit is an odd thing to say about someone widowed young and suddenly. I both felt for her and was annoyed by her in equal measure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I connected so much to Melissa‘s journey as someone who has also lost my SO, who had to make similar decisions about life support, and who has lived through my own grief journey. Although grief is an extremely personal and unique experience, it‘s nice to know you‘re not alone. Melissa‘s story was relatable, real, & beautiful. Her grief & love were palpable through her words. This was an incredible tribute to a beautiful relationship.

Eggs I read this too-it‘s authentic and shows that grief and loss is experienced differently by every individual. Sorry for your loss 💔😓 Lost my husband after 18 yrs of marriage and 3 daughters 3y

After just a few pages, I knew this one would hit home for me in a big way. Although completely different situations, there are some very spot on similarities between Melissa and Joel‘s story and my own story of losing my love and partner of 8 years, Rob. ❤️❤️❤️ Tissues and wine a must. #grief #memoir #loveisbeautiful

Wow! I didn't quite know what to expect going into this. I cried throughout most of the book, which I've never done before. I cried while writing the review!
Widowish is a very well written memoir. I felt so much emotion for everyone. Melissa is so fortunate to have been surrounded by so much love. I admired how raw she was; I'm sure some things were extremely difficult to share.
It is a reminder that good people and true love both still exist.
