An instant classic with a bear-sized heart, Hannah Golds debut novel is a touching story of kindness, adventure, and forging your own pathperfect for fans of Pax and A Wolf Called Wander. There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, thats what Aprils father tells her when his scientific research takes them to a faraway Arctic outpost. But one night, April catches a glimpse of something distinctly bear shaped loping across the horizon. A polar bear who shouldnt be therewho is hungry, lonely and a long way from home. An excellent choice for readers in grades 3 to 7, this fierce celebration of friendship includes full-page black-and-white illustrations throughout, as well as information about the real Bear Island and the plight of the polar bears.

I‘m wrecked. This was an amazing story about love and family and adventure and finding yourself and your purpose. April befriends a lonely and injured polar bear where bears shouldn‘t be. Her distracted, grieving father doesn‘t believe her, leading her to take a dangerous and disastrous step.

“Friluftsliv,” April repeated softly. It was a word that sounded like mermaids, enchanted forests, or something ethereal and magic.

Lovely little story - I'd recommend this if you have young readers who are learning about or who want to understand climate change. It's a hard topic, but I think this gives the message that anyone can make a difference, and we all have to try. But it's also a fun adventure of a brave and smart little girl. And the illustrations are beautiful.

Tamra I showed it to my daughter and she‘s game! She wanted to know why there aren‘t polar bears left. 🥲 4y

Oryx @Tamra hope she loves this one. Maybe she'll grow up to save the bears for us all. Lovely that you have a reader ♥️ 4y
Tamra @Oryx well, she‘ll tell you she reads because she “has to”, but I can tell she enjoys the books she reads. She‘ll pick up graphic novels on her own, but chapter books, unless they are exceptional, she reserves for mom imposed daily reading. 😉 4y

Excellent little story with a big punch. I learnt that the ice is melting much faster than it has ever. Polar bears in big danger. A delightful way to introduce this to kids plus other kid feelings. I was enchanted.

Love, love, love this fabulous MG story celebrating curiosity, imagination, empathy, friendship, & perseverance. When April & her father arrive on Bear Island for their 6 month stay in the Arctic, she‘s determined to learn what happened to the bears & why none remain on the island. While her father works, April starts exploring & one day makes a remarkable discovery. April is a fantastic character & this is a great debut. On sale 2/2/21.
