pickA wonderful collection of works from the author and women poets from 1910s to the 1930s. Taking certain lines from each of the featured poems, Grimes interestingly recreates her own. The poems talk about womanhood, black history, nature, etc. I like getting to know the poets introduced (bio in afterwards), some poems more striking than the others, and I love the gorgeous illustrations, varied in style, by different artists.
pickGrimes discovers female poets of the Harlem Renaissance, using the words of their poems to create poems of her own. Not only are both the Renaissance and Grimes' work beautiful, rich with African American experience, the book includes colorful illustrations by contemporary artists. Recommended.
pickFreaking FANTASTIC. I don‘t like poetry because I have never taken the time to learn how to analyze it... so that‘s on me. But I got it! The poems that Nikki selected for this compilation and then the way that she bounced off of them felt familiar. These poems are not airy fairy, they felt like spoken word, raw and powerful.
