Laxmi's Mooch
Laxmi's Mooch | Shelly Anand
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A joyful, body-positive picture book about a young Indian American girl's journey to accept her body hair and celebrate her heritage after being teased about her mustache. Laxmi never paid much attention to the tiny hairs above her lip. But one day while playing farm animals at recess, her friends point out that her whiskers would make her the perfect cat. She starts to notice body hair all over--on her arms, legs, and even between her eyebrows. With her parents' help, Laxmi learns that hair isn't just for heads, but that it grows everywhere, regardless of gender. Featuring affirming text by Shelly Anand and exuberant, endearing illustrations by Nabi H. Ali, Laxmi's Mooch is a celebration of our bodies and our body hair, in whichever way they grow.

This book was AWESOME! Laxmi is worried when her friends points out she has a little moustache. Girls are not supposed to have mustaches, or hair all over their bodies! Laxmi‘s mother does a great job at pointing out that everyone has hair in very odd places and it serves a purpose. Laxmi takes her mom‘s lesson back to school with her and shares the love of a little hair with everyone.

LibrarianRyan This book was so great. It takes a child feeling ashamed about themselves, and turning it around into an important lesson that makes everyone feel better. 3y
IndoorDame Great subject for a picture book! I just checked this out! 3y
LibrarianRyan @IndoorDame We have been in lockdown, and we are just back today, so I am trying to get everything updated. So much make up. You would think I haven't been working at home. UGNNN 3y
IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan oh, no! Good luck getting everything under control! 3y
Oldschool_millenial Man I needed this when I was younger! I also have a "mooch" and I have dark body hair. I don't think I need to explain the insecurities that came with that as a teenager 3y

There have been lots of fun Mustache books in the past, but none of them have looked at a girl with a mustache, or other dark body hair. This book is supposed to look at that with love and affection and a bit of humor. Cant wait to read it.
