I heard an i/v with the author who described the true story of the brutal murder of 3 University students in a Nigerian Town as the source for thus novel. Psychologist Philip, who has recently returned from the US is asked by the father of one boy to investigate. Philip + his assistant are viewed with suspicion + he is quickly at risk while his marriage is also under strain. An interesting twist on the crime novel, well worth trying.

An interesting look at the concept of mob mentality and how people can almost be manipulated into doing someone else‘s bidding without real realising - especially when considering social conflicts that can sit deep in a community. It was different to the usual crime stories I have read previously and enjoyed the fast pace and snappy chapters. I did feel certain parts were underdeveloped. But overall a great read.

Three young students are brutally murdered in a Nigerian university town, & the murders & those who participated are filmed & put on social media. Very few people are on trial for the murders & those who are seem to be at risk of escaping justice. The father of one of the boys contacts investigative psychologist, Philip Taiwo, & asks for his help in ascertaining why the killings happened. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Philip's research is into crowd behaviour & violence but he may be out of his depth with this case.

This one puts you through the wringer of emotions! The sheer horror & brutality of the three young students' deaths is shocking, but there's more to come when Philip Taiwo (recently returned to Nigeria with his family from living in the US) comes up against the culture clash during his investigation.

OutsmartYourShelf It's not a high action thriller, or even a pacy legal thriller, it's an examination of the issue of mob violence & the atrocities to which this can lead. The main character also has his flaws, an estrangement with his wife could be sorted out with a conversation but Philip decides to nurse his grievances instead, & he flirts with his attraction to another woman. 13mo
OutsmartYourShelf Overall though I enjoyed it enough to finish reading it & will pick up the next in the series. 3.5🌟

Curled up in bed with Corey to finish this one. I flew through this, it was a pacey read that definitely kept me gripped. The context of Nigeria was central and was so interesting, as was the idea of mob mentality and the why did it happen, as opposed to whodunnit. I felt the narrative style was a bit jarring at times and because it was fast paced there were elements that felt under developed. However, I will def read the next one in the series.

This book is so good!
It‘s a whydunit - we know who was killed, how, and since a mob was involved, a lot of whos.
But the father of one victim needs to know more: why.
So he hires a psychological detective to dig into it more.
And it just rolls from there, and I loved it. Easy to settle into; hard to put down once you get about halfway through.

I have been in a HUGE reading slump this year. 😣

I‘m not sure if this book has totally gotten me out of it, but it was good enough for me to finish it and, right now, that‘s a pretty big endorsement! The “mystery” at the center of the book was good, but what I really loved was getting to know part of Nigeria (albeit a darker side for sure).
