What a sad truth about women….😩
Perhaps this is not unusual but I am a bit of a sucker for historical fiction set in places I know well, especially when it features real-life figures I am familiar with. Lindsay Hatton‘s Monterey Bay springs to mind, for example. Here, Dorothea Lange is one of my favorite photographers of her era, and the Bildungsroman aspect of the novel is interesting. More interesting to me, though, are the parallels to contemporary racism and xenophobia.
Best book I‘ve read so far this year. All the ⭐️s
I‘ve enjoyed Dorothea Lange‘s photography but knew little of her life. This was a well done historical novel revealing her independence to strike out on her own at a young age across country, to where she knew no one, to pursue her dreams. It also captures San Francisco and the early 1900s, from the early “Red Scare” and anti-immigrant sentiment to the free spirited, life loving artistic community. Recommend.
Loved Darznik‘s first novel, Song of a Captive Bird, making this an easy one to pick up. The Bohemians is very good and enjoyable. The story line follows Dorothea Lang from her landing in 1918 San Francisco through the 30‘s. she is known for her Photojournalism, but I found the most interesting characters to be Caroline. There are clear through lines in the historical & political climate of 100 years ago and today. A bit uneven, but I recommend.
Dorothea Lange shows through her lens more of the soul than most people see with their eyes.
The Bohemians is her and her Chinese Assistant‘s AY-Yee (Caroline in this HF) story starting out in San Francisco, CA.
Here is my review:

Don‘t mind me, just sitting here in my favorite spot on the front porch! A little 20‘s music jamming with me while I read The Bohemians by @jdarznik.
This historical fiction is about Dorothea Lange one of my favorite photographers as her time in San Francisco! This is the perfect way to spend the last day of March and the USA National Women‘s History Month!
This book will be released April 6, 2021. Pre-order it from your favorite Indie bookstore!
This may be the right book at the right time. It's historical fiction about Dorothea Lange and the rest of the artists that converged in San Fran around WWI. But the author was inspired by Lange's assistant of whom there is not much info other than being referred to as 'China girl' so she talks about racism and xenophobia and what it might be like to be half Chinese at that time. I really liked it.
