Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights | Ayaan Hirsi Ali
39 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Why are so few people talking about the eruption of sexual violence and harassment in Europes cities? No one in a position of power wants to admit that the problem is linked to the arrival of several million migrantsmost of them young menfrom Muslim-majority countries. In Prey, the best-selling author of Infidel, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, presents startling statistics, criminal cases and personal testimony. Among these facts: In 2014, sexual violence in Western Europe surged following a period of stability. In 2018 Germany, offences against sexual self-determination rose 36 percent from their 2014 rate; nearly two-fifths of the suspects were non-German. In Austria in 2017, asylum-seekers were suspects in 11 percent of all reported rapes and sexual harassment cases, despite making up less than 1 percent of the total population. This violence isnt a figment of alt-right propaganda, Hirsi Ali insists, even if neo-Nazis exaggerate it. Its a real problem that Europeand the worldcannot continue to ignore. She explains why so many young Muslim men who arrive in Europe engage in sexual harassment and violence, tracing the roots of sexual violence in the Muslim world from institutionalized polygamy to the lack of legal and religious protections for women. A refugee herself, Hirsi Ali is not against immigration. As a child in Somalia, she suffered female genital mutilation; as a young girl in Saudi Arabia, she was made to feel acutely aware of her own vulnerability. Immigration, she argues, requires integration and assimilation. She wants Europeans to reform their broken systemand for Americans to learn from European mistakes. If this doesnt happen, the calls to exclude new Muslim migrants from Western countries will only grow louder. Deeply researched and featuring fresh and often shocking revelations, Prey uncovers a sexual assault and harassment crisis in Europe that is turning the clock on womens rights much further back than the #MeToo movement is advancing it.

This looked like it might be good, but I only made it about halfway. I raised an eyebrow early on at Ali‘s interpretation of statistics in a way convenient for her argument and her failure to contextualize, as well as her use of the term “illegals.” Then when she started in on feminists, I was all done. While she‘s right that people on the left need to look at and talk about all aspects of immigration, there‘s far too much confirmation bias here.

BarbaraBB She‘s from my country and she is very controversial. She quickly became popular and then she radicalized imo 1d
IriDas Ali used to be a Fox News darling back when I was a Fundamentalist. When I left the church I found she was also a darling of the anti-Muslim atheist crowd. I guess she converted to Christianity now? She is a Trump supporter. Brave of you to try to read her book. 1d
Hooked_on_books @IriDas If I‘d known all that, I don‘t think I would have tried! 😂 It was just so awkward to see her bend over backward, trying to fit statistics to her belief. It was so clear and the giant holes are just glaring. 1d
IriDas @Hooked_on_books Her usual readers don‘t really care about facts, so her book should still make her some money. 😂 1d
Hooked_on_books @IriDas That doesn‘t surprise me! I‘m glad I got it from the library. 22h

I've read all three of Ayyan Hirsi Ali's books, and this one is not only the best, but also the most important.

It may no longer be fashionable to make such comparisons, but the economic evidence is unequivocal: liberal democratic societies are more peaceful, prosperous, and tolerant than those that permit autocratic rule, as in Russia; one-party rule, as in China; or theocracy, as in Iran. Yet these days, those who advocate the superiority of Western civilization are demonized, especially on college campuses as racists or white supremacists.

Let that sink in. Rather than POLICING (which would be so "racist" and un-woke, women are forced to have their own separate cars since Muslim men can't help but to act like animals.

keithmalek @Milara I'm 23% of the way through it. In the beginning, she gave A LOT of statistics, which gets boring to read after awhile. But then it starts to get very interesting (and very disturbing). And no, I haven't heard her podcast. 4y
keithmalek @Milara You would also enjoy James Kirchick's "The End of Europe." 4y

MAN IN CAFE: You are not in Paris! The mentality is different! It's like back home.

Cologne, Germany on December 31, 2015. And of course, the women who spoke out about being sexually assaulted were labeled as "racist" for mentioning their attackers ethnic identities or migration status.

In a 2017 report by the Swedish Migration Agency, female employees reported 15 cases of sexual harassment by asylum seekers whose applications they were administering. Staff reported 279 threats by applicants in the year to August 2016. In some cases, female office workers were targeted as they left the office, then harrassed and threatened with rape or murder on their evening commute.

"They do not respect the same things we do," said one lawyer defending an Afghan man for the rape of a Turkish student in an Austrian park in 2016. Among the "things" the perpetrators clearly do not respect are women's rights to physical safety and sexual self-determination.
