Culpeper's Complete Herbal
Culpeper's Complete Herbal | Nicholas Culpeper, Steven Foster
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
The classic book on herbal remedies, newly illustrated, edited and with commentary by US herbalist and author Steven Foster. It combines the charm and information of Culpeper's original seventeenth-century text with up-to-date, modern, practical usage. It includes details about where to find each herb, astrology, and medicinal benefits. -- adapted from publisher's web site.

Pickpick

4/5⭐ Not good for practical advice, but great for historical info or astrological associations, esp. for writers. The modern annotations don't do a complete job of updating Culpeper's info.

I adored Culpeper's personality, between his insistence that the rich look out for the poor & his scathing rants about such things as common herbal naming conventions. Never thought an herbal dictionary would be so entertaining.

Also a very pretty edition.

“Our physicians must imitate like apes (though they cannot come off half so cleverly)“

This dude's scathing commentary from 1652 has me in stitches. Really, is there a better way to be taught herbal lore?

There is a #Remedy for nearly everything in this book. If I could find my copy I'd look for a remedy for senility since I can remember exactly where it was on the shelf when I lived in Canberra 20+ years ago but I have no idea where it is now😳🙄😬 #RedRoseSeptember
