The One and Only Sparkella
The One and Only Sparkella | Channing Tatum
2 posts | 1 read
Leading actor, producer and director Channing Tatum's picture book debut, The One and Only Sparkella is a charming ode to self-esteem and the love between a father and daughter--illustrated by Kim Barnes. Ella is excited for her first day at a new school. Glimmering pencil case? Check! Shimmering backpack? Check! Glittery ribbons in her hair? Check! She can't wait to meet the other kids and share her sparkly personality. But her first day doesn't go quite as planned: Her new classmates don't like her disco-ball shoes, her PB&J-with-sprinkles sandwich, or her rainbow-y unicorn painting. Ella decides to try to be less sparkly at school the next day so the other kids won't make fun of her. But with a little help from her dad, she soon learns the importance of just being herself, no matter what other people say.

Tatum‘s absolute love for his daughter definitely “sparkles” in this one. Sparkella is starting at a new school and has some issues fitting in—no one understands her personality. Tatum‘s narrative explores identity and being oneself and having the courage to be true to oneself. This #PictureBook would work well for 5-7 year olds. #BBRC #LetterO

LibrarianRyan This is on my list for this year. I am hoping it's good. 2mo
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan My kid lit professor in library school would hate me saying this, but it was cute. She hated picture books being described as cute. But, I cannot think of any other way to describe it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle There is nothing wrong with cute. It's what a lot of parents seek. It don't have to be fine literature, kids need cuteness. (Can you tell I would probably not get along with your kid lit professor. Heck I did'nt get along with my own). :) 2mo

Librarybelle She‘s the only professor who I did not get along with, @LibrarianRyan . I like the word cute! 2mo
marleed I would say my 3-yo girl-boy grand twins most often request the ‘cute‘ books in my extensive picture book collection. 2mo
Librarybelle @marleed She had such a clinical perspective on books. I don‘t think she ever consulted kids! I still gravitate towards the “cute” books on the shelves! 2mo
