High-Risk Homosexual
High-Risk Homosexual: A Memoir | Edgar Gomez
5 posts | 2 read | 17 to read
"A debut memoir about coming of age as a gay, Latinx man in a culture of machismo, Gomez's High-Risk Homosexual opens in the ultimate anti-gay space: his uncle's cockfighting ring in Nicaragua, where he was sent at twelve years old to become a man. The story then moves through the queer spaces where he learned the joy of being gay and Latinx, including Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, a drag queen convention in Los Angeles, and the doctor's office where he was diagnosed a "high-risk homosexual." With vulnerability, humor, and quick-witted insights into racial, sexual, familial, and professional power dynamics, Gomez shares a hard-won path to taking pride in the parts of himself that he'd kept hidden. It's a hilarious, beautiful reminder of the importance-in a world that is so often oppressive-of leaving space for joy"--

This is my new favorite, “I see myself” book. Edgar Gomez writes about growing up Latino and gay in a very readable, hilarious and poignant way. From cockfights in Nicaragua with his uncles, to trying to hide himself away in Florida so that his family can feel comfortable, to his coming out during his high school, to the Pulse nightclub massacre, to him passed out with a pizza at a DragCon in L.A, there is so much to learn from this book. Pick!

KathyWheeler I just love the title! 2y
Reggie @KathyWheeler in grad school he has this health clinician he goes to for PREP. And his fake answers because he doesn‘t want to portray himself as lonely are that he has sex with men maybe twice a month and when she writes his prescription the description high risk homosexual is written on there. It‘s such a good book. 2y
Centique Well that has to go on the TBR for sure! Great review Reggie 💕 2y

KathyWheeler @Reggie I‘ll reading it soon. My library has it, so I checked it out. 2y
CarolynM Great review! Stacked for sure🙂 2y
Reggie @Centique @CarolynM thank you ladies! A lot of it has to do with him being feminine in a machismo culture and because to be a girly boy is wrong, Edgar has to put up a lot of fronts. I was a feminine boy and my mother of all people bullied that part of me so much so that later on I would go out with friends of friends. And they would tell them, a gay guy is coming so watch what you say. And I would take it as a badge of honor that they would 👇🏼 2y
Reggie that they guessed that one of our other friends was the gay guy. Lol. Which also leads to internalized homophobia because I was one of those guys that would say Jack from Will and Grace was too gay. There was a lot to unlearn when I got older. It‘s a mindfck. Anyways. Hope you ladies like it! 2y
Centique @Reggie that‘s incredibly tough on you my friend 💔 This is not at all the same or equivalent but a little mindfuckery too - I used to be proud that I could fit in with the boys and they‘d say she‘s not “like the other girls” as if I was better/smarter because I was less “girly”. Took me a long time to learn that I was buying into the sexism. 🙄 I hope you‘ve healed a lot since that time 💕 2y
CarolynM I‘m sorry, Reggie, that‘s a lot to process. I hope it‘s true that what doesn‘t kill you makes you stronger💕 2y
vivastory I see a Peter Straub. Which one did you get? BTW I'm planning on watching Barbarian this upcoming weekend. Looking forward to it! I also hope to see Pearl soon 2y
Reggie @vivastory it‘s Ghost Story. It‘s always been on the list of best horror to read that I‘ve never read. I have read two by him. The Hellfire Club and the one with the blue rose on the cover. I‘m getting psyched up for the last Halloween. 2y

CarolynM I can‘t find the right words to comment sensibly on this, but I want to let you know it strikes a chord with me. 2y
Reggie @CarolynM I just can‘t take the gay guy dies of AIDS storyline anymore. And yes, thank you to the elder gays who survived and did warn us. This whole passage really resonates with how I feel about that. We need happier endings that tell us there is a future and that we get to grow old now. 2y

This was so amazing. I loved how it ended on a neutral note- which is true to the queer experience. It‘s the beautiful yet tragic existence of being a queer person, sometimes your life is perfectly interconnected with your community and sometimes I‘m incredibly isolated.
