'One of the most evocative thrillers I've ever read. The writing is superb - shades of Hollinghurst and Pat Barker combine in a taut, finely plotted mystery. The battlefield is almost a character in itself, and the presence of its dead disturbed me throughout. Be warned - this dark, intelligent story is very hard to put down. Haunting, cinematic, and utterly gripping' D.B. John An extraordinarily atmospheric and page-turning historical thriller. In 1919, on the desolate battlefields of northern France, thousands of soldiers undertook the immense and dangerous task of gathering up the dead for mass burial. Two Storm Wood follows the stories of three British people whose lives have been affected by war in very different ways: a young woman who boldly sets out to find out what happened to her fianc, who went missing in action; a soldier tasked with co-ordinating the retrieval of the dead; and a detective sent to investigate what appears to be a series of murders in the empty, devastated landscape. Unmissable high-quality historical fiction of the best kind.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

A crime novel set during WWI, Amy Vanneck goes to the battlefields of France to get the remains of her fiance. It's a really hard job and quite impossible. Captain Mackenzie job's now is to recover the remains of his fellow soldiers but his task is made much harder with the horrible discovery. He has discovered a war crime along with Amy they try to solve the crime and find her fiancé too. It very gritty, atmospheric and gripping.

#20in4 @Andrew65

I know I'm a long way from 20h but l finished the book before the ARC expired and l'm happy.

I lived the book too. It's great both an historical novel (great details, felt so real) and a mystery, which is more than l can say about most of the historical mysteries l've read.
The plot moves in a non-linear way, back and forth, slowly building the picture. But the true gem of the story are the characters.

Lived it!

Loved this central part.
The mystery became more so. There was a new murder and Westbrook surfaced as the Scotland Yard detective - though his past seems to have import too.
Edward's life during the was is revealing disturbing truths.
But where I'm loving the book in in the character building. Absolutely fantastic.

Loving this book.

This is an incredibly well-written historical novel. I love the way the military life is presented. The great details about the life in the trenches, and especially the soldiers' and the officers' feelings.
All these characters feel so real.
Amy is an incredibly tough female protagonist, and still she totally belongs to her time.
Westbrook, the disfigured veteran and former Scotland Yard detective, is equally relatable.

It's quite late here, and l need to put this book down, but boy, is it good.
Very hard, very crude, but also full of very human characters, and the mystery is impenetrable.
Can't wait to read on tomorrow.

Andrew65 Good start.👏👏👏 3y
