The Transgender Issue
The Transgender Issue: An Argument for Justice | Shon Faye
Trans people in Britain today have become a culture war 'issue'. Despite making up less than 1% of the country's population, they are the subjects of a toxic and increasingly polarised 'debate', which generates reliable controversy for newspapers and talk shows. This media frenzy conceals a simple fact: that we are having the wrong conversation, a conversation in which trans people themselves are reduced to a talking point and denied a meaningful voice. In this powerful new book, Shon Faye reclaims the idea of the 'transgender issue' to uncover the reality of what it means to be trans in a transphobic society. In doing so, she provides a compelling, wide-ranging analysis of trans lives from youth to old age, exploring work, family, housing, healthcare, the prison system, and trans participation in the LGBTQ+ and feminist communities, in contemporary Britain and beyond. The Transgender Issue is a landmark work that signals the beginning of a new, healthier conversation about trans life. It is a manifesto for change, and a call for justice and solidarity between all marginalised people and minorities. Trans liberation, as Faye sees it, goes to the root of what our society is and what it could be; it offers the possibility of a more just, free and joyful world for all of us.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️‍⚧️
I finished 9 books this past week for the #TransRightsReadathon
I still have to review a few but they were all great and I discovered some new favorites. I think it's so important for trans stories to be shared wide, for those who relate, to see themselves reflected, and for those who don't, to learn and gain empathy 🩷🤍🩵 #TRR24

What I love most about this book is how Shon Faye sets her own terms. Explosive, uncompromising, and very, very timely, this is a sharp and comprehensive manifesto for trans equality.

Some of Faye's rhetoric relied too heavily on the reader agreeing with principles such as anti-capitalism. Human rights should be championed regardless of where one sits on the political spectrum.

Still, essential reading! Very important and well argued.

A very informative, useful book. Please read if you think this issue is only about toilets or just if you want want to inform and educate yourself.
Shows the harm, as always, that capitalism and the patriarchy does to all sections of society that don‘t fit in the box and how slurs, infighting and crap in the press help the establishment.

This is a brilliant book. Shon Faye analyses the titular transgender issue from a radical intersectional perspective, arguing that there can be no real trans liberation under capitalism. Her dismantling of the TERF and trans misogynistic bigotry, and how harmful it is to all women, is particularly good. Highly recommend this.

TrishB My son got me this for Christmas 👍🏻 I should read soon! 2y
