The Caiman
The Caiman | Marķa Eugenia Manrique
3 posts | 6 read
The unforgettable story of a man and his alligator. When Faoro the clockmaker adopts a baby alligator, he has no idea that someday their story will travel far and wide. But the town of San Fernando de Apure would never forget this kind young man and his adoring alligator, who played with the neighborhood children, took part in Faoro's wedding, and, eventually, mourned his loss. Now their story is being shared with the world. In this delightful picture book first published in Venezuela, the author brings us back to her own childhood in Venezuela, as one of the children who used to visit this famous caiman, to tell the story of a man who loved animals and how his friendship with his alligator sparked a lasting legacy.

Based on a true story, a Caiman is adopted by a man named Faoro. The Caiman can come and go as she pleases, plays with the neighbourhood children, and is part of his life even after he gets married.

This was a sweet (and sad) children‘s book and a quick read for #Venezuela #FoodAndLit

I was scrolling through my Kindle library to see if I had anything that could be used for #readingtheamericas2023 and found this. I can‘t believe someone actually kept a caiman as a pet, but it is apparently a true story. The author was one of the children who played with the neighbor‘s alligator. šŸ¤Æ The relationship between Faoro, his caiman, and the neighborhood was sweet and made me cry. The art style isn‘t my favorite, but it suits the tale.

BarbaraBB How bizarre! What country did you use it for? 1y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB I tagged the country in my brain, but clearly didn‘t send the message to my fingers. šŸ˜‚ #Venezuela 1y
BarbaraBB That is good to know, I hadn‘t found a book for Venezuela yet! 1y

#CuriousCovers Day 29: this will win the award for unusual #Pets. While I still probably would not have reptiles as #pets, The Caiman demonstrates how interspecies compassion and love can blossom among those who are brave enough to reach out to creatures different from oneā€˜s self. Happy to receive a review copy of this: My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-nf1
