#NewInternationalist #555 has an article on the police & justice system in #Nigeria, in which is mentioned its execrable ranking at 122 of 125 countries surveyed for the 2023 World Internal Security and Police Index. #Denmark tops the survey, having the most effective and least corrupt police force (as measured), #Venezuela props up the list at the bottom. #UK is 23rd, & #USA at 32nd is reasonable, but not in the top tier for equitable justice.

so-soI dove into this book expecting depth and an intimate and searing look at Venezuela. Unfortunately, I found this hard to follow which took me out of the story as I attempted to figure out if we were in the present or past. But even with this, I still thought the prose were lyrical and the overall tone melancholic which definitely heightened the writing and my enjoyment.

bailed2✨ I DNF‘d this because I felt really lost. I was hoping for understanding in the topic, and man there was an information! It goes through several peoples real life events in interviews. I listened to this so it got very confusing very quickly. I can‘t say there was a timeline since there was a lot of different situations. I want to say it was mostly linear. I‘m going to research this a bit more and maybe try this again as a physical read.

It probably would have been better if I had made some arepas and platanos, but I was too lazy. I may have to hit up my fave Venezuelan restaurant to get my fix. I‘m also struggling to get into this book.
I‘ve really slowed down reading for the month of April with only 8 books finished. Six were for #foodandlit #Venezuela, 1 for #authoramonth (I wasn‘t inclined to read more by this author), and 1 for #readingOceania #Tonga (and completing that challenge for the year). I‘ve tagged my favorite book this month, oddly a book of short stories that I normally don‘t care for, but these were exceptional.
pickI‘ve come to love nonfiction works from authors who‘ve trekked the world thanks to the #readingthecontinents challenges. So I couldn‘t miss this book written about the author‘s journey through #Venezuela from 1798-1804. He was a naturalist so he includes many in-depth descriptions of plants and animals, landscapes and people. He was obviously extremely knowledgeable and tough to deal with the harsh terrains of all sorts. He was sensitive to the ⬇️
Ugh! He described the mosquitos being so thick he couldn‘t see the horizon to take location measurements. Their faces and hands would swell from the biting and poking insects. Just miserable.

pick#Venezuela is a very bad place to be for Americans, if this book is to be believed. Based on my other readings about the country, sadly I do believe it. Once a thriving country, rich because of its oil and a thriving economy, it is now a solid dictatorship rife with corruption and crime. So, Caracas is the perfect place for an AWOL‘d soldier escaping the Taliban to be found. But what is his real motive and what is America‘s for Venezuela? CID ⬇️
