American OZ
American OZ: An Astonishing Year Inside Traveling Carnivals at State Fairs & Festivals: Hitchhiking California to New York, Alaska to Mexico | Michael Sean Comerford
4 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
The real traveling carnival is in the pathos behind the scenes. American Oz is a rollicking, gritty, adventurous story of life in the secretive subculture of traveling carnivals. Youll never see your state fair or neighborhood festival the same way again! Comerford writes a bold, inspiring true story of a year working shoulder-to-shoulder with the colorful characters and legends of carnivals. He shares stories of freaks, a carnival pimp, a tramp gold miner, and the last King of the Sideshows. An insult dunk tank clown is shot. Masked gunmen rob his carnival. And a young showman friend dies on the road. It's a new classic American road story as he hitchhikes to shows in California, New Jersey, New York, Chicago, Alaska, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Florida where he works in a freak show. He becomes the #1 hitchhiker in the USA and a top agent at the State Fair of Texas. He travels to the lawless foothills of Mexico to see the new face of the American carny. He exposes the truths about immigration, labor abuse, and living between two worlds. Comerford finds carnival people seeking meaning and love in their lives, and the answers always seem to be somewhere down the road.

American Oz - the story of a journalist who decides to take on the itinerant life of a carnie worker. It‘s a beautiful but at times heartbreaking work based on the lives of the other workers the author meets along the way!

I figured I‘d join in on the fun but i definitely have some catching up to do!

A really good tale of the life of a carnie. The author is a journalist who decided to spend a period of time living the life of a itinerant carnival worker, moving from show to show with the intention of seeing America and experiencing as much of the life as possible. A tale of both freedom and living the dream but also hard work, poor wages and long hours. Not my life, but I am kind of pleased that such a life still exists for the one percenters

keithmalek You might also enjoy "Eyeing the Flash" by Peter Fenton. I haven't read it myself, but it's on my list. 2y

This list of Qs is too interesting to pass up!

1. American Oz: An Astonishing Year Inside Traveling Carnivals. The full title is actually longer than this believe it or not!

2. Did anyone else look at their “read list” for this? Alan Heathcock‘s The Staying Freight, which is a short story from his collection Volt.

3. It‘s been a busy week…I‘ve loved the few moments of peace and quiet!

Thanks to @Eggs for the great Qs!#wondrouswednesday

Eggs Thanks for joining in 👍🏼📖💙 3y

This memoir showed the complex nature of both carnivals and the people who work at them. Carnivals and fairs still have the ability to excite and enthrall me. Many of the carnies who work at them year after year were awed and romanced by them as children. Yet at the same time, the stories are tragic….owners are corrupt, conditions are tough, pay is terrible, issues like addiction and mental illness are rampant.

JoeMo The workers express a love of the freedom the lifestyle gives the, and yet they‘re trapped by it at the same time as they lack the qualifications to do anything else. This book is everything nonfiction should be: beautiful, romantic, harsh and gritty. Kudos to the author for putting his life on hold for a year to take this grand adventure….the thought of taking a similar journey terrifies and excites meat the same time! 5/5 heavily recommend 3y
TheAromaofBooks Oh this sounds so interesting! I grew up in 4-H so both county & state fairs were a big part of my life. We had carnies that returned to their same spot year after year & it was always so interesting to talk with them & hear about where else they had been. I always wondered what it would be like to live life on the move that way. 3y
