#OnThisDay in 1861 poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning passed away at age 55. Barrett was the first female poet to receive a nomination for Poet Laureate (although it would be another 150+ years before the first - Carol Ann Duffy - was appointed). While she is perhaps best known for her love poems, Browning also delved into the political in her poetry, advocating for the rights of children, the abolition of slavery, and more. #HistoryGetsLIT
