Shuffleboard Pilots
Shuffleboard Pilots: The History of the Women's Air Raid Defense in Hawaii, 1941-1945 | Candace A. Chenoweth, A. Kam Napier
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Events surrounding the December 7th attack have been detailed in more than one hundred books & countless articles. Few of these resources, however, have touched upon the part played by Hawaii's civilian population & none has detailed the work of the Women's Air Raid Defense, an organization organized in the difficult early days of the war on what was literally the front line of battle. Young local women & military wives volunteered to replace soldiers who were needed for duty on other Pacific Islands. Simply to have made the decision to remain in Hawaii in late December 1941 was an act of courage.

Finished earlier in the week. I read about this book in the back of Radar Girls by Sarah Ackerman & had it transferred to my local library branch from our main library. An informative & insightful look at the Women‘s Air Raid Defense (WARD) a civilian organization that operated from 1941-1945 in Hawaii providing air defense after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Worth seeking out & reading if you like WWII/women‘s history.

tpixie I love finding a book from another book- those unexpected rabbit holes! 5mo
tpixie Oh my! $133 on Amazon. I better check my library!! 5mo
DebinHawaii @tpixie Yes, it‘s a fairly thin paperback published by the Arizona Memorial Museum back in the 90s. Not a lot of pages but good info! I‘m going to keep my eye out for a used copy to buy. 5mo
DebinHawaii @tpixie I think it‘s a little obscure. Even in the state of Hawaii, only the main branch had a copy & I had to wait for them to send it over! 5mo
tpixie @DebinHawaii I‘m glad at least Hawaii had this book! 5mo

My pick for today‘s #Veterans prompt is not quite accurate as the Women‘s Air Raid Defense (WARD) was a civilian group, but it‘s a fascinating piece of history & the tagged.book (I got a copy through my library) is part of my November TBR after reading about it in Radar Girls.
