What We Harvest
What We Harvest | Ann Fraistat

For fans of Wilder Girls comes a nightmarish debut guaranteed to keep you up through the night, about an idyllic small town poisoned by its past, and one girl who must fight the strange disease that's slowly claiming everyone she loves. Wren owes everything she has to her hometown, Hollow's End, a centuries-old, picture-perfect slice of America. Tourists travel miles to marvel at its miracle crops, including the shimmering, iridescent wheat of Wren's family's farm. At least, they did. Until five months ago. That's when the Quicksilver blight first surfaced, poisoning the farms of Hollow's End one by one. It began by consuming the crops, thick silver sludge bleeding from the earth. Next were the animals. Infected livestock and wild creatures staggered off into the woods by day--only to return at night, their eyes fogged white, leering from the trees. Then the blight came for the neighbors. Wren is among the last locals standing, and the blight has finally come for her, too. Now the only one she can turn to is her ex, Derek, the last person she wants to call. They haven't spoken in months, but Wren and Derek still have one thing in common: Hollow's End means everything to them. Only, there's much they don't know about their hometown and its celebrated miracle crops. And they're about to discover that miracles aren't free. Their ancestors have an awful lot to pay for, and Wren and Derek are the only ones left to settle old debts.

I read this because it‘s a Stokercon nominee for best YA. This was great. Wren is at home trying to protect her family‘s farm from the blight that has taken over the surrounding farms and has turned some of the townspeople and all the woodland creatures into blighted zombies. When she can‘t reach her parents she calls her ex, Derek to come help her. Even if it fizzled just the tiniest bit in the end there were times when I was genuinely 👇🏼

Reggie creeped out. We went from scary farm field to empty house at night, to scary basement then back out into the scary woods where you could see the “fireflies,” the glowing zombie eyes. Nowhere felt safe, lol. The author also had me feeling for Wren and all the people in her life and their community. So pick! A big blighted pick! (edited) 10mo
TrishB Great review Reggie 👍🏻 will look for a cheap one here, new is pretty expensive. 10mo
KT1432 Glad I saw your review! This sounds really interesting! 10mo
Reggie @TrishB Hope you like it! I grew up in a small town and some of the stuff in here just resonated with me. 10mo
Reggie @lele1432 yeah, it was good. I think the author would do good for herself if she had left some open endings or left some things hazy, but I really liked this. Hope you do, too, if you pick it up. 🙂 10mo

This was such a unique take on Zombies. In this, zombies are called The Blight, which by definition; 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒, 𝑡𝑦𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑖. Since they are a product of the founding family‘s crops…this would make them aptly named. The writing is lush in a macabre way and pulls you in like a magnet. Also, the characters were shockingly, not annoying to me…since frequently, YA characters are.

A different take on the zombie genre, blending it a little with an isolated, idyllic society that clearly goes wrong. The writing was really good & I loved world-building. Hold on to your pants because this baby is a fast-paced ride. The characters were well done & overall things were realistic & believable. A magical world blended with a horror component that was tense, gory, & downright creepy. A roller coaster of a ride that I really enjoyed.

Absolutely amazing writing that reminded me of the work of Erin A Craig. The perfect anoint of eerieness, mystery and romance. I adored the world the author created and the pacing of this book. I loved the ending and how everything wrapped up, plus it was a HEA which I really loved. The plot twists were unpredictable and I really loved the descriptions too. This was an absolutely excellent debut novel from this author!

Super excited for this book release on March 15! Ann was our fabulous creative writer for Ada Lovelace in the educational alternate reality game The Tessera, and I'm thrilled that her writing is getting a wider release.
