Personal Attention Roleplay
Personal Attention Roleplay | Helen Chau Bradley
8 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
A young gymnast crushes on an older, more talented teammate while contending with her over-worked mother. A newly queer twenty-something juggles two intimate relationships--with a slippery anarchist lover and an idiosyncratic meals-on-wheels recipient. A self-hating mixed-race freelancer takes drastic action to change her life. The legacy of a pitiless piano teacher plagues a stressed-out single mother. The stories in Personal Attention Roleplay are propelled by queer loneliness, mixed-race confusion, late capitalist despondency, and the intersections of intimate and political power. They centre young Asian Canadians struggling to navigate the dissonant space between cultures, as well as the shifting desires and realities of QTBIPOC relationships and communities. This precise and eerie collection hints at the uncanny but is grounded in the details of social interactions and everyday life.

It‘s hard for me to pick a favourite story because every one of them is strong in this debut collection by Helen Chau Bradley, a queer Canadian author who uses they/them pronouns. The two I will probably think about the most are the title story, which is about becoming dependent on a particular ASMR video channel; and the final story, which is about an all-women punk band on tour. #LGBTQ #CanLit #ShadowGiller2022

I got a bike as an early birthday present! I‘m excited. I haven‘t had a proper, outdoor transportation bike in 20+ years.

The bike and I took a nice, long ride together this morning, with a brief pause so I could drink some water and read a wee bit from my current short story collection. #gaymay

Nute I like everything about this post! Have fun with your new bike.🚲 So awesome to return to bike riding as outdoor transportation after 20 years!🙌🏽 2y

xicanti @Nute thanks! I spend a lot of time on my stationary bike, but I‘m no longer used to how much arm work and balance is involved with actual biking. It‘s been a fun adjustment! 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Oh I love it!! 💚 2y
xicanti @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks it‘s so pretty! I can‘t wait to accessorize it. 2y

It‘s a pain day, which means I‘m liable to do a lot of reading. First up: my daily short story, to be followed by some nonfiction and more of my novel.

I picked up my first round of holds for Gay May! These are all books I learned about on Litsy. Gonna read down that Stacked tag.

I also laid in three Queer Beers to drink while I read them. Look at that sweet can redesign! #gaymay #blameitonlitsy

A wonderfully inventive authentic collection of queer Asian Canadian short stories: a queer metal band's tour with a new manager; a woman replacing her codependent relationship w/ her roommate w/ an ASMR channel; a tween gymnast w/ a crush on her older teammate; a kid who sabotages a friendship when she feels she doesn't measure up. So emotionally true, lovely writing and skilled storytelling (one story is told solely in unattributed dialogue!).

"The top of her head smells like a good dream."

"I thought about how enormous life was and how enormous also the space between people could be."

Absolutely thrilled to get review copies of Metonymy Press's fall 2021 titles today! I have never not loved any book they have published and I have no doubt these two will be on my favourites shelf as well.

Personal Attention Roleplay is a collection of quirky queer short stories. The Good Arabs is a poetry collection about queer and/or Arab identities.
