Pure Colour | Sheila Heti

I‘m pleased to see Heti‘s Pure Colour and Brian Thomas Isaac‘s All the Quiet Places on this list; they also made the Giller longlist and there isn‘t usually much overlap between the two awards. I‘m almost finished Finding Edward and really enjoying it. But the other two on this list are both books that I DNF‘d. 😕 #ShadowGiller2022

Well, I only predicted 2 out of 5 correctly. I‘m so pleased to see the Sleeping Car Porter made the shortlist. And I‘ve just started If an Egyptian: loving it so far.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I figured 2 as well. But Hage over Belcourt. How disappointing!!! 4mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I have to read every single one of these! 😚 4mo
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders You can do it! The longest one is only about 360 pages: 4mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy that‘s the one I‘m starting with! 😚😚 4mo

In the City of Pigs | Andr Forget

Does making art necessitate a deal with the devil? A former musician tries to navigate a new future for himself, without really knowing what it is he wants. Funny, dark and socially-aware, this novel is about the funding of cultural arts in our society and also the issue of affordable housing in cities like Toronto. I really enjoyed it. #shadowGiller2022 #CanLit

Aztecs! Pirates! Espionage! Science! (animal, vegetable or wormberry?) Colour from coal! Health scares! Global trade! I‘ve been reading a lot of fiction lately for my #ShadowGiller2022 project. I needed a change & it felt so good to sink into this well-researched microhistory of the red dye obtained from the cochineal insect. It‘s entirely fascinating.

A story within a story—tight, polished and propulsive. I really enjoyed the ride and the moral questions raised in this brief (179 pages) novel.

I put on a judging robe and declared my own personal longlist for the Scotiabank Giller prize. I even decided which book will win! Video: My Picks for the Giller Longlist #CanLit #ShadowGiller2022

Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Thanks Penny. I added my longlist to the Shadow Giller blog and couldn‘t remember how to add images so text will have to do. I like your signature at the bottom of your longlist post. 5mo
KathyR I'm disappointed that "Animal Person" is not on the Giller longlist. It only shows how subjective judging is. ? 5mo
Lindy @KathyR Me too. Maybe it will win the GG. 🫣 5mo

A young man disappears from his southern Ontario farm job (on his girlfriend‘s farm) for a few months & then shows up with the strangest excuse: he had turned into a hive of bees. The premise hooked me and the execution kept me turning the pages. This is one wild ride! #ShadowGiller2022 #CanLit

TrishB Wow 😯 5mo
batsy Great cover and super intriguing! 🐝 5mo
Lindy @batsy Yep! I‘m going to seek out author interviews to find out how Katie Welch came up with this idea in the first place. 5mo

Lindy @TrishB it‘s different! And all the farm stuff rings true to me, having grown up on one. 5mo
TrishB I‘m very scared of bees so I‘m not sure I can read a book about being one! 5mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders There are WAY too many books to choose from!! Who the heck knows what‘s going to be on this list on Tuesday!! 5mo
Lindy @TrishB better stay away from this one in that case 😉 5mo
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Do you happen to know at what time the longlist will be announced on Tuesday? 5mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy 🤔 hmmm I don‘t actually know?? I had in my head 11 am but I don‘t know if that‘s even the right time? 5mo
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders they‘ve put an announcement on their website: 9:30 am ET (edited) 5mo
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy early to rise for you!! 5mo
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders Ha! I get up at 5 most mornings. The tricky thing is that I‘m travelling to Saskatchewan that day, but fortunately I will be home until 8:30 am. [rubbing hands together in anticipation of the longlist] 5mo

Ezra's Ghosts: Stories | Darcy Tamayose

Pickpick

A pair of linked stories bookend the two novellas in middle of this beautiful collection. Grief & the acceptance of change are major themes. I was surprised, delighted & moved by all of it. Ghostfly is from the viewpoint of a woman who has been murdered. In The Ryukyuan, an old man is possibly becoming a bird. The final story is set in 2044, with tantalizing references to societal changes & new technologies. Loved it! #ShadowGiller2022 #CanLit
