You Are Not a Gadget
You Are Not a Gadget | Jaron Lanier
A NATIONAL BESTSELLER A programmer, musician, and father of virtual reality technology, Jaron Lanier was a pioneer in digital media, and among the first to predict the revolutionary changes it would bring to our commerce and culture. Now, with the Web influencing virtually every aspect of our lives, he offers this provocative critique of how digital design is shaping society, for better and for worse. Informed by Lanier’s experience and expertise as a computer scientist, You Are Not a Gadget discusses the technical and cultural problems that have unwittingly risen from programming choices—such as the nature of user identity—that were “locked-in” at the birth of digital media and considers what a future based on current design philosophies will bring. With the proliferation of social networks, cloud-based data storage systems, and Web 2.0 designs that elevate the “wisdom” of mobs and computer algorithms over the intelligence and wisdom of individuals, his message has never been more urgent. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Very excited to have just gotten this upcoming Jaron Lanier book on Netgalley. I am wondering if the cover is a punny warning of a cat-ass-trophy? 🤔

Pickpick

This book is a sort of philosophy of technology. The author talks about how our current models of networks and software can be dehumanizing and ways to combat that trend. It's a big concept kind of book and I'm sure I didn't understand all of it, but I good enough of it to make this a really good read. This is for the @bookriot #readharder2017 prompt: "a nonfiction book about technology." I'm now at 37/50 challenge books read for the year.

DrexEdit Oh! And this book is 10 years old so it's interesting to see where the author did correctly predict some trends. Because it's mainly philosophy and doesn't get bogged down in specific technologies, it's not dated. 7y

This book is so interesting! This little sidebar is about why smells are so much harder to duplicate with computers than images or sound. I like this way of thinking about smelling! 😊

Sorry had to post this one to. This is a sentiment I hear about litsy all the time. I feel the same way. We're not classified into arbitrary groups that choose this forum for interacting. We're here because we're all passionate about one obsession. No matter who you are or what your life experience, if you love reading and books you will connect and be welcome here. 💜

quietlycuriouskate Precisely! I was wary of joining Litsy in case it was just Facebook-with-books. It couldn't be more different. 💚 7y

This book is definitely smarter than me! Lots of interesting things to say about technology though.

We have to think about the digital layers we are laying down now in order to benefit future generations. We should be optimistic that civilization will survive this challenging century, and put some effort into creating the best possible world for those who will inherit our efforts.
