The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls
post image

I need your #help, Littens! I‘ve had several people recommend this one to me, but I‘ve listened to about 1.5 hours out of 10.5 hours and I‘m just finding myself thoroughly depressed by this woman‘s childhood! Please tell me it gets better...if it just gets more depressing, I don‘t think this one is for me. Help me decide: should I bail? #tobailornottobail (Also—is it weird that I think the author is not doing a great job reading her own memoir??)

RebelReader I read the book years ago and basically it is sad. If you need to bail, but want the ending I‘d see the movie. I thought it was very well done. 6y
RebelReader Also, I‘m not a fan of authors reading their writing. Except for poetry...then I love to hear them read it. Weird I know! 😂 6y
knittedgnome I had a hard time with this one too and felt it didn't go enough into her life as an adult. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Stacy_31 I read that book in college, and it was painful to finish. The whole story is sad, and doesn‘t really get better, IMO. I wanted to like it. But I think she‘s just not a good author, even though it‘s her memoir. 🙈 (edited) 6y
asiriusreader @RebelReader thank you for your opinion—helpful to know the movie is worth seeing, especially since I‘m leaning towards bailing if the whole story is just as sad. I do enjoy some authors reading aloud their own works—Neil Gaiman comes to mind (though I think I could probably listen to him read just about anything!). 6y
asiriusreader @knittedgnome I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who had a hard time with it! I‘m thinking it‘s just not for me. 6y
asiriusreader @Stacy_31 thank you for your opinion—that is my fear (that it‘s not going to get any better). I‘m going to give it another 15 minutes of listening and then call it. Most likely going to be a DNF for me. I‘m not really loving her writing style either. 6y

I may have gone a little overboard ordering books for the baby. 🙈 My sis-in-law is an Usborne book lady and she hosted an online party the other night. My rationalization is that I‘m supporting her and her business! Plus, we love the “That‘s Not My...” series...and how could I pass up the 🦄?! This bookish mama has waaaaay too much fun buying books for baby girl! #babiesofLitsy #raisingreaders

vkois88 Omg I need that book for my daughter! We have a couple of the other books from that series that I randomly found in excellent used condition at Goodwill... but a unicorn?!?!? Want!!! 6y
vkois88 Oh, and the fox book! 6y
asiriusreader @vkois88 both books are super cute—great for babies or toddlers. I knew I had to have the unicorn when I saw it on the Usborne website. 😍🦄 6y

So...I think I misread the order of days for the #StepfordSummerParty and posted about music yesterday with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack! 🙈 oops! Though, I actually think it works for 70s fashion too! Here‘s another 70s band my mom introduced me to much later than the 70s. Gotta love the bubblegum disco-pop hits of ABBA, right?

I plan to take the trivia quiz later on tonight when I‘ve finished the rest of the book!

GripLitGrl My mom loved Abba too😆 great pic that big belt has 70's all over it😁 6y

mabell @Cinfhen OMG I definitely have! Love those, I just didn't know who sang them! And, Take a Chance on Me! 🎶🎶 6y
SledgeReader @CarolynM Great first concert pick! Mine was Molly Hatchet! 🤣😂🤣 6y
Cinfhen I knew you knew @mabell My kids used to watch a tv program in the 90s called SClub7 they were a teen ABBA tribute band and my daughter who was maybe 7 or 8 kept insisting I couldn‘t know ANY of the songs from the olden days 😂😂😂she was thoroughly confused for the longest time (edited) 6y
mabell @Cinfhen Haha yep! 😂😂 My sister loved SClub7! 6y
asiriusreader @GripLitGrl I still listen to them when I need a pick me up so I thank my mother for the introduction! 😛 6y
asiriusreader @CarolynM that must have been quite the first concert experience! And @SledgeReader I don‘t think I‘ve heard of Molly Hatchet. 🤭 6y

My #StepfordSummerParty music pick is .... the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack! As an 80s baby, I missed the music in person, but my mom used to out this CD on as she cleaned the house and so I grew up grooving (and cleaning!) to the disco sounds of the BeeGees and all the rest! Still working on the book...starting to get pretty creepy!

DebinHawaii Great music pick! 🕺🏻💃🏻🎼I will love the BeeGees forever! 😍 6y

I‘m still coming to the #StepfordSummerParty! I was just waiting for my fondue to melt...that‘s pretty classic 70s, right? I love me some cheese, so I think I‘d be hovering over the fondue pot most of the party! 😂

So far (and I‘m only in the middle of Chapter 1), I‘m into this book! I like Joanna a lot, and I‘m surprised that the book doesn‘t seem dated at all. I‘m looking forward to reading on and seeing when the horror will come into play!

A momentous first yesterday for our little nugget—first (of many!) trip to the bookstore! We went to Barnes & Noble to grab a gift and of course walked out with more books for our sweet little reader. Sandra Boynton has become a favorite (Barnyard Dance is read almost daily!). #raisingreaders #babiesofLitsy #bookstoretrip

Suzze Oh my. That looks exactly like the B&N Children‘s Dept. I was in charge of until I retired. The octagon, the Summer Reading sign. I do miss the kids. 6y

Secretly snapped a shot of this story time action tonight. Too cute not to capture the moment! This girl already loves books...and her daddy, but that goes without saying! This is a cute intro book to Dr. Seuss. Not written by him, but it references all his books and uses his rhyming and rhythms. I think it‘s meant to be read to baby in utero, but it still works! #raisingreaders #babiesofLitsy #drseuss #littlebookworm

I really enjoyed this novel, which focuses on the question of what makes someone a mother. The characters, even the secondary ones, were richly developed, and Celeste Ng made excellent use of the tool of multiple perspectives to tell their stories. I liked that the book began at the end, so to speak, and then the story of how it came to that point unfurled through the rest of the novel. Lots of interesting questions raised, dealing with ⬇️

asiriusreader Topics ranging from motherhood to class to race. A bit slow to start and there were moments of the last chapter left me unsatisfied, but overall, a great and engaging read. Looking forward to seeing the film/TV adaptation whenever it comes out! 6y

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood
post image
Pickpick

I finished listening to this on Audible today and I‘m still trying to figure out how to put into words how I feel about this one. It‘s hard to say that I ‘loved‘ this story, when it made me feel so uneasy. Atwood is a masterful storyteller and I thought her world building of this eerie dystopian society was so well done. Claire Danes was an AMAZING narrator—not sure if I would have felt the same about it had I read it on my own. Offred is an ⬇️

asiriusreader incredible character, and she will stay with me as a reader for a long time. The story will stick with me as well, as it has opened my mind to so many “what if...” and “could that happen...” questions. I‘m looking forward to finally allowing myself to watch the Hulu adaptation! 6y
MelissaSue81 We just watched the first episode of the Hulu series this week after I re read the book a month or so ago. The book is great, the series might actually be better. 😱 6y
GypsyKat I read this during the last presidential election. It was bad timing, and it literally gave me nightmares. Great book! 6y

asiriusreader @MelissaSue81 awesome! My poor husband has been waiting and waiting for me to read it so we can watch the show...glad to hear it‘s a great adaptation! That‘s what everyone keeps saying! 6y
asiriusreader @GypsyKat yes, I can see why the nightmares! Margaret Atwood did a new afterword for this edition, and what chilled me to the bone was when she said she didn‘t want to have any elements in the society that had no historical precedents...meaning all of the horrible things have already actually happened in various societies throughout history! 😟 6y
posierope This book made me so uncomfortable but I absolutely loved it. 6y
asiriusreader @posierope such a good way to put it. Same. 6y

MommyWantsToReadHerBook I read The Casual Vacancy, it was a lot like reading a Joanna Trollope novel - small town, story told from different perspectives, there are a few crises and surprises. It wasn't amazing, truth be told, but not unenjoyable. 6y

Wow. Just wow. I finished this one a few days ago (took me a bit longer because I could not, would not listen to it a) alone in the house with my baby girl or b) at night. Yup, it was that creepy...or I‘m just that big of a wimp!) The research and writing were superbly done. Although McNamara sadly died before she could finish this work, it doesn‘t detract from the storytelling at all. Her fellow researchers did an excellent job filling in the ⬇️

Finished listening to this one today. All in all, an enjoyable thriller, if a bit predictable. Once the ‘twist‘ was figured out, it made the ending a little anticlimactic. But the characters were well-developed, and, as usual, I liked the use of multiple perspectives to tell all their stories. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

KateFulfordAuthor @asiriusreader perhaps you could consider my debut? Reviews are saying: “I loved this book more than I initially thought I would. Fulford infuses her characters with intense personalities that are prone to clashing with those of others. I loved Eve from the very beginning..." Hey fellow parent/family Littens! Anyone else heard that Amazon is launching a book subscription box for kids? I got an email from them inviting me to try it out a couple of days ago (I think it may be still in beta testing? They said for now you had to be invited by them). I decided, “Why not?” Plus, 22.99 seemed reasonable for 4 brand new board books. You can choose from every 1, 2 or 3 mos delivery. You also get to pick all your books ahead ⬇️

asiriusreader Of time, which is nice if you‘re worried about duplicates. It arrived today and I just signed up on Wed. Only negative is you just get the books, no cute card or wrapping or surprise. asiriusreader @MelissaSue81 yes!! I didn‘t look super close, but they have a 0-2 box, a 3-5 yo box, and a 5 to 9 (?) book box...worth exploring! 6y

Ok, couldn‘t stand it any longer. I was having a serious case of #fomooagr (that would be Fear of Missing Out on a Great Read 😝) seeing all your posts and seeing the story break on the news over the last few days. As soon as I finished Ove today, I went right to the Audible store and grabbed this one! Excited to start listening!

A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
post image
Pickpick

I did not want this book to end. That‘s how good it was—especially for a book that I began reading, thinking, “What is all the fuss about? Why does everyone seem to love this book?” I was hooked as soon as Backman started sharing Ove‘s backstory. As Ove transformed, I was right there with him, laughing and crying through his story. This one will stick with me for a long time.

Krabxzxx Aw same! I loved this book. 6y

Finished this one yesterday in a breathless rush of the final 60 pages! What a thrill ride! Loved the fast-paced nature and that the author kept you guessing until almost the very end. The writing style was right up my alley, and Finn did an excellent job developing the main character and making you care for her despite her flaws. As a Hitchcock fan, I loved reading all the references to his films...the author cleverly used them as clues too.

Liatrek I just got this book for 2 dollars at a Half Price book sale. I'm very excited to hear about the Hitchock reference s because I love his movies. 6y
asiriusreader @Liatrek then you will really enjoy this one! So many great references woven throughout, in a very thoughtful way that adds to the story‘s guessing game! 👍🏻 6y
AndreaReads I did enjoy this one! It was definitely a page-turner! 6y
