Song of the Exile | Kiana Davenport
5 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
In this epic, original novel in which Hawaii's fierce, sweeping past springs to life, Kiana Davenport, author of the acclaimed Shark Dialogues, draws upon the remarkable stories of her people to create a timeless, passionate tale of love and survival, tragedy and triumph, survival and transcendence. In spellbinding, sensual prose, Song of the Exile follows the fortunes of the Meahuna family--and the odyssey of one resilient man searching for his soul mate after she is torn from his side by the forces of war. From the turbulent years of World War II through Hawaii's complex journey to statehood, this mesmerizing story presents a cast of richly imagined characters who rise up magnificent and forceful, redeemed by the spiritual power and the awesome beauty of their islands. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Both of these books are kicking my butt for different reasons. The cruelty toward others prevalent in both of them is making me put a hold on reading them. This is truly not the way I want to start off my year.

Thousand-Lives I completely understand this. Good job knowing your limits and putting them aside. 3y
Suet624 @Thousand-Lives Thank you. I don‘t like to quit on a book but in this case I just had to. 3y

“He...learned to wear a nosebag, a gauze muzzle with straps fastened behind his ears.” 1941. Shanghai. Friends, I have a new name for the mask I wear ... a nosebag.

These are the two books I‘m reading/listening to at the end of this year. Both detail life amidst the horrors of World War II - one takes place in Warsaw, the other in Hawaii. Seems I could have picked some more uplifting material. However, by comparison I have much to be thankful for. Onward to 2021 with hope in my heart. Best wishes and much love to all.

Jas16 I hope you have a wonderful New Year. 3y

#AyupAugust
This sweeping saga of the Meahuna family from WWII to Hawaii‘s statehood is still in my #TBR but I will get to it one of these days. 📚📚📚😬📚📚As it centers around a local 🌺 jazz musician looking for his soul mate after war has torn them apart it seemed to fit the #SingItBack prompt. In the book jazz music is referred to as “the tongue of the exile.”

Cinfhen Lovely choice 5y

#JuneBookBugs #indigenouswriters I have a fair amount of books by local Hawaii writers, but finding ones by indigenous Hawaiian writers (who identify as being at least partially descended from Native Hawaiians) was tough. Not all of these five came from the same lists, but I wanted authors/books that I have read or at least are on my #TBR (Don Ho's bio, Song of the Exile & Hawaii's Story) & there's a favorite cookbook too! I'll link books👇🏽🌺

DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Thank you! @RealLifeReading It was a good prompt for me. It gave me a short list of more authors/books to look for. I have another of Davenport's books in my TBR stack I forgot to show. 7y
