Swallow the Air | Tara June Winch

Pickpick

A compact, lyrical first novel by Australian Aboriginal author living in France, Tara June Winch. It‘s a coming if age story, written when she was 21. Her writing is beautiful. I was so pleased to read that it is on the Australian high school English curriculum. What a talent.

Her current novel The Yield is on the Stella Prize shortlist. 🤞👏😍

LeeRHarry Just started The Yield and enjoying it so far - it‘s this month‘s pick for my bookgroup 😊 5y
MrsMalaprop @LeeRHarry Loved The Yield. Tara signed my copy & the tagged book at the Perth Writers Festival recently. Also saw her in Ubud last year & follow her on Insta. #fangirl 😍 5y

#Australianreadinghour

Can‘t get much more Australian than this bloke @CarolynM 😁.

And @Rissreads & I are going to see Clare Coleman talk about her new book The Old Lie.

CarolynM Excellent choice! 5y

#JuneBookBugs #indigenouswriters I have a fair amount of books by local Hawaii writers, but finding ones by indigenous Hawaiian writers (who identify as being at least partially descended from Native Hawaiians) was tough. Not all of these five came from the same lists, but I wanted authors/books that I have read or at least are on my #TBR (Don Ho's bio, Song of the Exile & Hawaii's Story) & there's a favorite cookbook too! I'll link books👇🏽🌺

Cinfhen Excellent graphics and way to highlight your beautiful State and people💖💖💖 8y
RealLifeReading Thanks for this list! I haven't heard of any of these 8y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Thank you! @RealLifeReading It was a good prompt for me. It gave me a short list of more authors/books to look for. I have another of Davenport's books in my TBR stack I forgot to show. 8y

Love Medicine: A Novel | Louise Erdrich

Some #indigenousauthors from my shelves.

Kristy_K Is Bird Medicine good? 8y
RowReads1 @Kristy_K I like the parts I've read. Some are a bit let down because it concentrates more on individual stories then overall shamanic views. 8y
teebe Evan Pritchard is not a good source for anything to do with Indigenous people. 8y

RowReads1 @teebe Does he just claim heritage? 8y
teebe @RowReads1 seems that way. His bio says "a descendant of the Mi'kmaq people (part of the Algonquin nation)" and the Mi'kmaq are NOT Algonquin. I'm Algonquin... we're in the same language family (Algonquian) as the Mi'kmaq language according to linguists, but they are two separate nations. Plus "descendent" always rings alarm bells for me. I've seen people call out the content of his books too. 8y
RowReads1 @teebe Thanks for letting me know. I'm remembering talk about this on Twitter. 8y
Louise @teebe So interesting to hear you are Algonquin! Are you from Ontario? Are there any Algonquin writers whose books you recommend? 8y
teebe @Louise I'm Algonquin, Mohawk and Tuscarora 😁 From Quebec and living in Ontario... but, well, it's all Algonquin territory anyway. Not many but there's Lynn Gehl, Jay Odjick, Rick Revelle, Albert Dumont, Jane Chartrand. 8y
Louise @teebe What a fascinating heritage! I used to live in Ottawa and loved to visit Algonquin Park! Small connection! 😉Thanks for the list of authors. I'll look them up! I'm doing the #ReadingAroundTheWorld challenge and have found it really interesting so far to include aboriginal authors from the various countries. 8y
teebe @Louise Cool, I currently live in Ottawa. Hadn't heard about Reading Around the World until now but that's great. An Indigenous view of any country tends to be vastly different than the mainstream. I set myself a personal challenge recently that I'm going to read at least one book (but probably more) by an indigenous person from every continent. 8y
Louise @teebe That is a great personal challenge. Here's one I can recommend from Taiwan: 8y
Louise It would be really interesting to create a hashtag on Litsy for #indigenouswriters to make it easier for people to find good indigenous authors and titles from various countries. 🤓 8y
