Woyzeck
Woyzeck | Georg Buchner
3 posts | 12 read | 1 to read
Written in 1836, Woyzeck is often considered to be the first truly "modern" play. The story of a soldier driven mad by inhuman military discipline and acute social deprivation is told in splintered dialogue and jagged episodes which are as shocking and telling today as they were when first performed, almost a century after the author's death, in Munich 1913.This volume contains an introduction and notes by Michael Patterson. The introduction provides biographical background on Buchner, as well detail on the discovery of Woyzeck after so many years of it lying dormant as an apparently 'unreadable' manuscript. It also provides a brief analysis of the play, a study of the historical source that influenced Buchner, the tragic character of Woyzeck and his motivations, the social dimensions of the play, and notes on specific productions, and Mackendrick's translation. This is the version of the text prescribed by Edexcel for Unit 4 (Theatre Text in Context) of the 2008 GCE Drama and Theatre Studies Specification.

The non-reader ordered the books kid#1 needs for school. He ordered second hand books.

I'm absolutely not opposed to second hand books, but those look like fourth hand. I'm certain the kid won't touch the one with the tea/coffee stains. I suppose we'll visit the bookshop on Monday.

TrishB I would not touch the tea stains either! I buy a lot of second hand and have only had a couple that I‘ve given away to charity shops. 2y
MicheleinPhilly Sigh. It‘s amazing what some sellers think is acceptable as far as the condition goes. 🙄 2y
julesG @MicheleinPhilly @TrishB The non-reader said they were advertised as 'in very good condition'. Well, I disagree. We're getting new books tomorrow. (which both kids are looking forward to, because we'll be entering a bookshop to actually buy something instead of just browsing) [should I mention that there's an edition of the Woyzeck book for €1.60? no need to get a 2nd hand copy 🙄🙄🙄] 2y

marleed Dang! I remember well the smell and feel of a brand new book in my own little hands as a kid. I loved it, and I‘m sure it was a big part of my love of books. Today I own some very well worn books but the difference is I‘m all grown up and appreciate the history behind the abuse ;) 2y

Pickpick

Reread for teaching purposes. I wish more classics clocked in at less than 40 pages.

For #augustphotochallenge and today's #politicsandbooks : Woyzeck by Georg Büchner
This is a rebellious attempt to show pauperism, determinism and fatalism. It is highly political. What put me off at first was that there are just a few scenes with loose context, but after some time of analyzing it became totally clear to me.
