Every Day the River Changes
Every Day the River Changes: Four Weeks Down the Magdalena | Jordan Salama
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
An exhilarating travelogue for a new generation about a journey along Colombias Magdalena River, exploring life by the banks of a majestic river now at risk, and how a country recovers from conflict. An American writer of Argentine, Syrian, and Iraqi Jewish descent, Jordan Salama tells the story of the Ro Magdalena, nearly one thousand miles long, the heart of Colombia. This is Gabriel Garca Mrquezs territoryrumor has it Macondo was partly inspired by the port town of Mompoxas much as that of the Middle Eastern immigrants who run fabric stores by its banks. Following the river from its source high in the Andes to its mouth on the Caribbean coast, journeying by boat, bus, and improvised motobalinera, Salama writes against stereotype and toward the rich lives of those he meets. Among them are a canoe builder, biologists who study invasive hippopotamuses, a Queens transplant managing a failing hotel, a jeweler practicing the art of silver filigree, and a traveling librarian whose donkeys, Alfa and Beto, haul books to rural children. Joy, mourning, and humor come together in this astonishing debut, about a country too often seen as only a site of war, and a tale of lively adventure following a legendary river.

Mehso-so

This was a book club selection & likely not one I would choose myself. While I enjoy travel writing, this came across a bit too textbook-y to me for a lot of it. I like more of a ‘story‘ to weave through. That being said, I learned a lot about Colombia. He focus is on the river Magdalena & the people that live with it, alongside it. With barely a mention of cocaine or Pablo Escobar (although the hippos made it in).

How many points do I get if I recently messaged my first great love, who I haven‘t seen in over 12 years, to recommend a book to him (tagged)? It wasn‘t personal. Just business. 😂

I honestly didn‘t realize it was remotely weird until I‘d already sent the communique. Personally, I think I should get more points for this than for “Recommended a book to a complete stranger.” I take this Reader‘s Advisory stuff pretty seriously. 😜🙈

BethM All of them minus calling in sick and tattooing. 2y
monalyisha @BethM YES! 🙌🏻 💯 I think the items listed are *mostly* standard operating procedure for us Littens. 😉 I meant it as more of a prompt to share the extremist lengths to which I recently went. The calling in sick one really hurts my Capricorn sensibilities, haha. 2y
Sharpeipup 20…is that good? 😉 2y
