The Rules of Backyard Cricket
The Rules of Backyard Cricket | Jock Serong
10 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
It starts in a suburban backyard with Darren Keefe and his older brother, sons of a fierce and gutsy single mother. The endless glow of summer, the bottomless fury of contest. All the love and hatred in two small bodies poured into the rules of a made-up game. Darren has two big talents: cricket and trouble. No surprise that he becomes an Australian sporting star of the bad-boy variety—one of those men who’s always got away with things and just keeps getting. Until the day we meet him, middle aged, in the boot of a car. Gagged, cable-tied, a bullet in his knee. Everything pointing towards a shallow grave. The Rules of Backyard Cricket is a novel of suspense in the tradition of Peter Temple’s Truth. With glorious writing harnessed to a gripping narrative, it observes celebrity, masculinity—humanity—with clear-eyed lyricism and exhilarating narrative drive. Jock Serong lives and works on the far southwest coast of Victoria. Formerly a lawyer, he is now a features writer, and the editor of Great Ocean Quarterly. His first novel, Quota, won the 2015 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Crime Novel. His most recent novel is The Rules of Backyard Cricket. Jock is married with four children and lives in Port Fairy, Victoria.

A brilliant and accurate description of boys growing up in suburban Australia. There was some humour, some suspense but ultimately I didn't enjoy the ending. The reader was fantastic though.

A fast paced, addictive story with enough plot twists to keep you guessing until the end. I enjoyed the Melbourne setting, particularly the scenes in the inner west. I have to admit, I found the ending a bit silly but this is an entertaining, engaging read.

This was our bookclub book this month and i finished it with 2 days to spare. I really enjoyed it, especially because it was set in Melbourne and so i was familiar with a lot of the locales

This book is very Melbourne. The mum works in a pub I've eaten in several times. The setting/place names are very familiar. Cricket is familiar. Enjoying it. Might even finish it in time for book club

I read the first chapter of this book this morning so I can at least say that I started it when I go to book club.

This book walloped me in a way I wasn't expecting. The style keeps you on your toes, the characters are wonderfully flawed, the writing is sharp and just so good. You don't need to like cricket to enjoy it, but you might need an Aussie to English dictionary for some parts. Full review will be on my blog as soon as I can form sentences again!

Imogen is at a friend's house till the morning, so I'm doing something I rarely do on my own - sitting at a cafe reading. Nice.

Dragon Enjoy 😀 8y
Marchpane How's the book? I've been eyeing this one. 8y
Sue @Marchpane I'm really enjoying it. The writing is really sharp, and has that particular Aussie tone that I don't realise I'm missing until I find it again. 8y
