Look up! From the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of the Hat Trilogy comes a new deadpan gem. Turtle really likes standing in his favorite spot. He likes it so much that he asks his friend Armadillo to come over and stand in it, too. But now that Armadillo is standing in that spot, he has a bad feeling about it . . . Here comes The Rock from the Sky, a hilarious meditation on the workings of friendship, fate, shared futuristic visions, and that funny feeling you get that there's something off somewhere, but you just can't put your finger on it. Merging broad visual suspense with wry wit, celebrated picture book creator Jon Klassen gives us a wholly original comedy for the ages.

Based on the title, you can probably guess what happens to his spot. This one has Klassen‘s offbeat sense of humor, with the turtle‘s steadfast devotion to his spot.

Jon Klassen is a genius at deadpan humour & the eyes on his be-hatted animals are amazingly expressive. This picture book is perfect for emerging readers, with wide leading and repetitive words. All caps are used to indicate raised voices. Two different colours of text help distinguish different speakers. The illustrations help youngsters predict narrative flow.
It‘s also hilarious for readers of all ages. #Canadian #kidlit #AllAges

ReadingEnvy We had to return this one to the library but my 3 yo and I sometimes recite it in the car anyway. His favorite part is "DONT ASK ME ANY MORE QUESTIONS!" I should try this one too. 2y
ReadingEnvy Whoops by my first "this one" I meant the one I tagged, second "this one" is the one you posted about. 2y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy I Want My Hat Back is my all-time favourite picture book. Your 3-year-old has great taste! 2y

Lindy @ReadingEnvy I take it the 9-year-old was aghast at the blood-thirsty horror of it? 2y

“Did you fall off?”
“No.”
Stubborn turtle and his mendacity will likely resonate uncomfortably with certain readers. Reflecting our darker side is a gift Jon Klassen has.
Also, notice how dialogue between two characters is signaled by alternating font colours in the book design.

Another snuff story by Jon Klassen. Actually very philosophical: no one wants anything more than what someone else has. Not to be confused with envy - this book illustrates mimetic desire: wanting to make a phone call because someone is using a phone. An echophenomena like yawning this book about the best spot could be used to teach about empathy. #everybodybooks
