An electric and seductive debut novel about a woman at a turning point in her life, and what happens when she discovers the spark that makes her feel whole again. After twelve years of marriage and two kids, Merit has begun to feel like a stranger in her own life. She loves her husband and sons, but she desperately needs something more than sippy cups and monthly sex. So, she returns to her career at Jager + Brandt, where a brilliant and beautiful Danish architect named Jane decides to overlook the break in Merits rsum and give her a shot. Jane is a supernovawitty and dazzling and unapologetically herselfand as the two work closely together, their relationship becomes a true friendship. In Jane, Merit sees the possibility of what a woman could be. And Jane sees Merit exactly for who she is. Not the wife and mother dutifully performing the roles expected of her, but a whole person. Their relationship quickly becomes a cornerstone in Merits life. And as Merit starts to open her mind to the idea of moremore of a partner, more of a match, more out of loveshe begins to question: What if the love of her life isnt the man she married. What if its Jane? Compulsively readable and shrewdly observed, Like a House on Fire is a razor-sharp look at love, motherhood, marriage, and identity. It pushes us to wonder what it really means to have what you thought you wanted, and yet come to realize that theres still so much more.

A really nuanced, authentic look at marriage, motherhood, careers, and sexual awakening. I identified so much with Merit‘s journey even though hers happened much later in life and under very different circumstances from my own. The writing is confident and assured and the character development felt very organic. This book cracked my chest open, ripped my heart out, and stomped on it. So naturally I loved it. 5🌟

I told myself I‘d stop buying books… but then I saw this one and my library doesn‘t have it in the system. So naturally, I had to acquire it somehow 🧐😅

Where the hell did June go?! I‘m keeping up with my #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks books, which is excellent and I did manage a few book box books this past month. But I have 3 more boxes coming this month and library holds have continued to come in. My #JulyTBR is feeling good right now but we‘ll what the month brings.

I really like this author‘s style. Most of the time I couldn‘t decide whether I even liked the characters. They made me laugh, cry, get angry, and reflect my own relationships. Ultimately, I adored them. In any event, the book was thought-provoking and entertaining.

A like, not a love, only because I don‘t really connect with working mother stories. But the two strong female characters were quite compelling and beautifully written.

McBrayer writes a complex narrative of a woman trying to decide between right and wrong, the morals that she has ingrained in her. This book is extremely “open door” and does not leave much to the imagination.

I loved the snarky writing and dialogue. I did listen to this on audiobook which was outstanding. I recommend this book highly and I think will make for great discussions.

#ARC #AvailableToday

On the cusp of turning 40, Merit a married mom to two little boys begins to re-evaluate her life & the choices she‘s made so far. It‘s a gripping story, easy & breezy although it contains plenty of relatable heavier questions about marriage, motherhood, relationships, work and happiness. This would make for a great bookclub discussion. It‘s contemporary fiction that I haven‘t read before. Definite pick 💕 #CoverCrush
