Manu: A Graphic Novel
Manu: A Graphic Novel | Kelly Fernández
4 posts | 5 read
A funny and heartwarming middle-grade graphic novel adventure about friendship, defying expectations, and finding your place. Manu and her best friend, Josefina, live at a magical school for girls, and Manu is always getting into trouble. The headmistress believes that Manu has the potential to help people with her magic, but Manu would rather have fun than fall in line. One day, a prank goes seriously wrong, and Josefina gets angry and wishes for Manu's magic to disappear... and it does. Manu uses a dangerous spell to restore it, but it makes her magic too powerful and nearly impossible to control. Great power comes at a cost, and it may be a price that Manu isn't able to pay!

Cute middle-grade graphic novel depicting the shenanigans Manu gets into at her school for magic in the Dominican Republic. Nice demonstration of how Catholic religious beliefs co-exist with belief in witchcraft and demons. I also appreciate the twist on the chosen one trope that keeps this from feeling too much like Harry Potter.

Raised from a young age by the Sisters of a magical boarding school - Manu is extraordinarily naturally gifted but is prone to wandering off and getting into scapes. She doesn‘t fit in particularly well with the other girls who resent her natural ability and mischievous ways. When Manu‘s powers go haywire - it‘s up to everyone to work together to save Manu and the town, from destruction. Loved the art in this gentle book about friendship.

Cute art, a bored/overpowered/mischievous main character, and an interesting setting (plus queer undertones). I liked the simple story, and enjoyed reading a book set in a catholic school where the focus was on serving a community rather than a boarder line fanatic religious devotion. I‘d have liked seeing more exploration in why Manu loses her powers. Over all, a cute middle grade read. #Comic #MiddleGrade #Magic

Ok, what do you think, #LMPBC Group M? I‘m back from the bookstore with these 3 and another copy of Amulet 1 because my copies at school keep disappearing. . . I think the kids are eating that book! 😂

Anyhoo, my options:
📚Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova (because my Ss love Raina T types)
📚Manu by Kelly Fernandez (Fantasy, magic school prank goes wrong)
📚The Ghoul Next Door by Cullen Bunn & Cat Farris

LibrarianRyan Nice selection. I have not read awkward but I read book 3 in that series and loved it (didn‘t know it was a series at the time). But all these have been on my TBR. 2y
IndoorDame These all look fun! I‘ve heard good things about Awkward, but I‘m happy with whatever you pick! 2y
Allylu They all look good. I haven‘t read any of them. I think I like Awkward the best, but whatever you choose will be fine with me. 😊 2y

Karisa Ok, let‘s go with Awkward for my pick. Thanks for the input! 💗 2y
Karisa @LibrarianRyan @IndoorDame @Allylu Do we want to go with post it comments on this round? It feels like comments written on the page might be hard to see on graphic novels. I‘ve done on lmpbc on black/white manga and it worked fine. Have you all tried the markups with graphic novels before? What works for you? 2y
LibrarianRyan @Karisa I usually to post it tabs or transparent post it in full color graphic novels. Mainly because I can‘t bring my self to cover someone else‘s art. 2y
IndoorDame @Karisa I‘d be happy with that. I tend to prefer not writing in GNs. How do other people feel? 2y
Allylu Seems like a crime to cover someone‘s artwork. I have lots of post-its. 2y
Allylu So we have Awkward, Stargazing, Snapdragon, and Rutabaga? Is that right? 2y
Karisa @LibrarianRyan @IndoorDame @Allylu Post-its or tabs work for me too. It‘ll be easier to separate artwork from annotations. Sounds like a wonderful lineup. I‘m excited for Round 14! 2y
Allylu Me too! 2y
