Shot Girl
Shot Girl | J. A. Konrath
3 posts | 1 read
Jack is a retired cop who knows and respects firearms. A recent victim of gun violence, she is confined to a wheelchair, getting physical therapy in a rehab facility, and teaching handgun safety and Second Amendment history to the elderly residents. A thousand miles away, a very disturbed individual with a modified 9mm pistol, a thousand rounds of ammo, and a singular obsession--to make history as the biggest mass murderer ever--decides to make that fantasy a reality. It has been said the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Jack is about to find out if that's true. SHOT GIRL by J.A. Konrath America has 300 million guns. This is the story of one of them. If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book. SHOT GIRL by JA Konrath Bad Language - 7 Scary - 7 Violent - 8 Funny - 4 Sexy - 2 Crossovers - Contains characters from the Jack Daniels and Associates series, the Codename: Chandler series, and the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective series

Mehso-so

I found this book so disappointing and feel the series has been in a downward spiral for a while. A lot of this book felt more about social commentary on guns which totally distracted from the story. The Jack chapters were good (overall) but her character has totally changed. Herb and Harry were a big miss from this book. Used to love this series.
Can only hope the books return to what they were.

TheSpineView Bummer! Great job for finishing despite the lack luster. 11mo

Look. I‘m a millennial. I occasionally speak in hashtags. I‘ve been known to say “lol” as a word. But I have almost NO idea what tf this says, and I‘m getting to the point with these chapters where I‘m thinking about just skipping them. (I mean, I know I won‘t because my brain won‘t let me, but LORD.) #shotgirl #jakonrath #jackdaniels

GondorGirl Wow. I'm a little horrified that I could follow the story there... but I don't think I could handle chapters full of this stuff! 😳😕 2y
actualdisneyprincess @GondorGirl I mean, I can figure most of it out if I actually pay attention to it, but like…I don‘t want to. It just feels like a cheap tactic to try to be ~relevant to today‘s culture~ and…just no thank you. It‘s really, really distracting, and doesn‘t work like I think Konrath wants it to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
actualdisneyprincess @GondorGirl (I really am getting to the point where I‘m like “…come on, self. Just skip his chapters. You can do it!!!” And the fact that I‘m even letting myself consider it is Big. 😂) 2y

GondorGirl @actualdisneyprincess I mean, you already know what kind of person he is and his chapters are making you crazy... I say skim them if you can't bring yourself to skip. 2y
actualdisneyprincess @GondorGirl The skim approach commences!!!! 2y
actualdisneyprincess ………okay, the big twist got me. Still hated the “look how up on current slang I am!!!” tactic, but the book overall ended up being satisfying. 2y

The quality of these books has gone SO far downhill, it‘s really disappointing. The Jack-focused chapters so far have been fine, but once again, the villain-focused chapters are not. The villain is (again) mainly annoying, though scary because people like him are out there, and his chapters are written in a caricature of chatspeak; hashtags and “4realz” and “lulz” and attempts at sounding gangsta, and just…why am I doing this to myself.

Andrew65 Totally agree with this! The series started so well and with such promise. Also finding the Jack character has changed totally and not who she was. 11mo
actualdisneyprincess @Andrew65 1000000% agreed!! I still randomly think about this one and just shake my head at how bad it was. 😬 11mo
Andrew65 @actualdisneyprincess It was more about social commentary, and not a great deal of story. Herb and Harry were virtually missing throughout and Jack so moany and negative. 11mo
actualdisneyprincess I thought what plot was there could have been a good one; the immediacy of following the characters through their experiences of this horrifying moment could have been really effective. The ridiculousness of the villain, though, was what really cheapened it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
